    There is still work to be done - the images in existing sigs are not yet linked, for example, and we are working on a way to get the images to load faster - which will improve the performance of the site, especially on the pages with a ton of images, and we will continue to work diligently on that and keep you updated.

Is it appropriate to drink cocktails at a meal?

    i dont drink any alcoholo at all and am often at business dinners in nicer restaurants.

    sparkling water or Red Bull [​IMG]

    Or even better... ask the server to give yoau glass of coke 3/4 full and a can of Red Bull and mix them casually at the table... that always gets a nice conversation going

    What? I think ordering a cocktail made with hard liquor during a meal is improper. I can understand having a cocktail before dinner, although I personally refrain and just stick with Champagne. If I drink hard liquor around mealtime, it will be after the meal is over. You're obviously free to do whatever you want, but I think ordering a cocktail during a meal would be a bad choice and you'd wreck your palate for at least a few moments.

    Places that have those giant martini glasses and a cocktail menu that lists nonsense like Cosmopolitans are places that I would likely avoid.
    The Cosmopolitan gets a lot of flak for its association with Sex And The City, but I think it's entered the pantheon of classic cocktails. I had the opportunity to meet Dale DeGroff, the legendary bartender who is often credited with inventing the Cosmopolitan. Mr. DeGroff modestly suggested that he merely modified the recipe to arrive at what we now recognize as the Cosmo.

    i delivered a talk in front of 300+ people 2 years ago and had an ad-lib joke with a glass of water that went over well... last year when planning a similar talk i had planned to pull out of can of Red Bull and drink it casually while delivering... instead of the usual glass of water.

    i was approved for it but decided to take things in a different direction... it'll happen eventually though.

    [​IMG] And I swear that I've never seen a bartender actually make an honest to goodness Cosmo from scratch. Of course, most people wouldn't know what the fuck a real Cosmo tasted like if Sarah Jessica Parker ran up to them and told them to take a sip of the "world's greatest drink".

    Was just messing with you though I don't go as far as 'improper' but then again I am a bit of a cocktail freak. Ruin your palate? Why, from the alcohol content? I imagine it isn't that much more than a big Cabby when properly made. Just stick with Champagne? Damn, man, that's properly SF Baller-style right there. Anyway, my perfect dinenr is Cocktail before, wine with, and something wonderful afterwards (be it dessert wine, fortified wine, spirit, or grappa. ~ H

    Some of us hail from cultures where hard liquor is consumed before and after meals. Our palates frankly are not all that refined to begin with, and our traditional foods never find their way to sophisticated tables. I wouldn't, for instance, insult my father by refusing an offer of whisky before a meal. [​IMG]

    This is an instance of a more general rule, "follow the host," which I find helps avoid most awkwardness. Where there is no host per se, you might defer to whomever arranged the outing.
