I live in a pretty damn big city. Huge metro area. Yet I can't go to a coffee shop or a restaurant without running into someone I know or someone my companion/friend at the moment knows or whatever. It's like all the people we know and associate with live in the same places, hang out in the same places, work in the same places, etc.
Obviously it's a function of building your social circle and sharing interests and preferences with your acquaintances, but crap...
It all makes sense now. My former boss lived in the same city for 30+ years, and in the same neighborhood for about 15 - and he is active in business, social stuff like charities and boards and so on. Whenever we were anywhere with more than 10 people anywhere in the city or the surrounding metro area he'd run into someone he knew.
