Well, the average person looks to spend $50-$100 on shoes. The cheapest new Shell Cordovan shoes are ~$500. To me, that explains why they are not popular amongst the general population.

I personally only like shell on wingtips, but that is just me. When the shoe is relatively plain, I find the rippling draws too much attention. On a wingtip, there is a lot going on design wise, so the creasing is less noticeable.

I'm toying with the idea of getting a pair, although its quite pricey.

Glad this is American ... and each can choose. I especially love the plain toe bluchers.

I think that shell cordovan is a lot like many of the things we love here on Styleforum.

There is a diminishing return on luxury items. I think a lot of people expect that things like shell cordovan shoes, seven-fold ties, suits made of Minnis flannel, or whatever else are going to be mind-blowingly better than a more mundane item -- that the price increase is going to reflect a proportional increase in awesomeness.

Some people understand, some people are just disappointed, and some people bitch about it.

For example, high armholes won't magically make you look like Daniel Craig.

I am a fan of Shell Cordovan. Once you have the basic shoes down (captoe, chukka, longwing, loafer) in calf, there's no reason not to buy fewer shoes in Shell. I think most of my future shoe purchases will be shell, even if that's only a pair a year.

I'm basically going for all the basics in shell, except for my captoe oxfords in black calf. I rarely wear suits

I have the shell basics plus some, but I'm doing the opposite - giving some of mine away.

b/c you are simplifying, or b/c of some other reason?

I have too many shell shoes and boots that get very little or no wear. It's time to simplify.

It's hard to build a shoe rotation where all shoes get equal wear,it takes time.

Some hadn't been worn in over three years, even new ones. I've also relegated shell to casual wear which means even fewer opportunities to wear them. They've gone to good homes, and I still have an ample supply left for myself. [IMG]
