No they're not.
The economy's crap, sales are being extended to move inventory and the remodeling probably has more to do with revitalizing the interior for a better spring merchandise presentation.
Many buyers were still placing spring 09 orders only last month so we'll see a longer period of spring product being placed on the floor this year.

I was shocked to see so many For Lease signs in shop windows this weekend. It's clear that a lot of retail outlets in the city (some only a few months old) have been lethally hit.

I almost worked there as an assistant buyer when I first moved to NYC.

Same here mate!

I was heading to National Wholesale Liquidators this morning and, found out they went out of business. That’s when I noticed the Tribeca, Canal, Noho, Soho, 14 Street, Gramercy Park, and upwards had so many restaurant/shops offering vacant signs.

I never expect to see the day NYC resembles a ghost town.

I am still shocked National Wholesale Liquidators is gone. I had to buy Nivea in Duane Reade for $8.99 when National Wholesale Liquidators sold it for $3.99.

I'm sure that Atrium is hurting these days. I'd be surprised if they were going out of business this fast, as they've got to have some decent cash reserves. One lousy season shouldn't kill them - but who knows?

From what I've heard, multi-chain shops that depend heavily on womens sales - like Scoop and Intermix - are in the worst position. They can't leverage their vendors like a larger retailer, have a uniquely expensive and recession un-friendly assortment, and have been abandoned by many of their female customers. Tough times for them.

^^

that's too bad about NWL. I used to live on Broome & Crosby in the mid-nineties and it seemed like I was always running there or to Canal Jeans for something.

I haven't stopped in the shop in years however, what you stated was not the case 10 years ago.

Yeah, that was the spot back in the day, but I haven't stepped in Atrium in years as well.
