I wouldn't class myself as poor. I have three pairs of C&Js and 4 bespoken shirts. But now that my savings are gone after rent, council tax and bills I have a budget of £30 per week.

I had exams this week which resulted in an oyster expense of £20. I then spent £10 after my last exam in the pub. And had to buy bog roll etc. for the flat. Point is, I am now -£15 budget-wise and will have to spend another £20 getting to uni.

My last weekly food shop came in at £7.20. This food has to last a couple of weeks before I can buy more to clear the deficit.

At some point I'll have to buy books for uni. I don't have a bed, I sleep on a single mattress on the floor, I want to change this by somehow saving £10 each week from my budget.

This isn't Haiti-poor or even poor at all. But how poor are you? And what's the poorest you've ever been?

Discuss.

I've never been poor. My parents would never allow me to be.

I've got the cold room here. We live in a "converted" warehouse, it's not very well converted. But I do have a Gieves and Hawkes MTM suit in 120s 14oz wool, which keeps me warm in bed.

Aren't you exempt from council tax, as a student? I seem to remember being so when I was in uni (early 2000s). You can also get hardship grants/loans if you're in danger of not being able to make it to uni because you're broke.

I grew up in a house where the heating broke and we couldn't afford to get it fixed, so we had sleeping bags/coats during the winter for a couple of years. Eating baked potatoes/Tesco value baked beans all the time as it cost around 20p per meal.

Being poor is ****** and I am glad that part of my life is behind me. I'm by no means rich, but I sure appreciate being warm and being able to cook decent meals without thinking about the cost.

i am a lot poorer than I have been for the last few years. discretionary income has been pretty nonexistent as of late because of a big mortgage, car payments, cc bills, student loans and down income as of late (which seems to be once again changing for the better).

The poorest I ever was when my first son was born. we were 24, newly married, I was making 20k a year and my rent was 700 a month. was driving a 20 year old car, was rolling quarters for groceries and receiving grocery store gift cards as presents from family. eating tuna, spaghetti and chuck steaks when we could. no nights out, no movies, no anything really.

Council tax - I don't live with students so I am not exempt. Used to live in halls and was going to live with students until they decided they didn't like me (and a month later after finding a place told me I wasn't going to live with them), ANYWAY, then I spent a month looking for somewhere to live and this is the only place that wanted me (others did then changed their minds). Explanation of why I'm not living with students and thus paying council tax, basically.

I have money in the bank. The problem is if you subtract a year's rent and bills, add any income from that then divide it by 52 you have a £30 a week budget which means I'd rather starve now than in six months be unable to pay rent.

Not that I'm actually starving. I bought 3kgs of pasta. It's just that's all I eat every day, plain pasta.
