Is anyone a Mentor?

Or have you had a mentor in the past? Im talking like mentoring kids, not career mentors.

Ive been thinking about this for a while, but want to hear other experiences about what Id be getting into, both the Good and Bad.

No specific questions, just your overall experience and specs (your age, kids age, career at the time, etc...) with a mentoring program.

I was a mentor in HS. It was in a drug abuse education program, sort of like D.A.R.E. There were 15 of us in the school that were in it. Every Friday, we were allowed to leave the school for a few hours and go mentor the 5th graders during their recess and 1 class period. It was supposed to be a good help for them as they made the transition from the grade school building into the MS/HS building. Anyway, it was kind of weird to see those kids I mentored my freshman year of HS are seniors in HS now, and getting ready to go to college and are leading respectable, drug free lives. It was a good situation for me, and a good situation for them.

Most of the kids were very responsive. They thought it was cool to have the big kids come hang out with them, play sports with them, talk to them, listen to them, etc. Obviously, some of the kids were less responsive than others, and some rebelled to the idea as a whole, but I'd say it was all worth it.

Little kids barely have enough money for their lunch, how can they afford to pay for a mentor??? Pfft. No thanks.

When I was in college, I volunteered for a program to help out little kids that came from abusive homes. The sad part was that the organization I volunteered with ran into some problems (they never quite explained what happened, I think there was some kind of funding issue) and so the program got cut. I never got to the point of mentoring because we were setting up safe houses and such for the kids to live in.

Time is scarce these days. I end up donating money instead of time.

Not yet, but I have been looking into programs in the NJ/Philadelphia Metro area. I am a strong believer that mentoring can make a HUGE difference in someone's life. I was fortunate to have a wonderful father to offer sound advice over the years, others are not as fortunate to have a good role model.

...and then your friend **** himself on a basketball court in front of everybody. Right? Or was it you? I can't remember and have no intention of looking that thread up but the moral of the story is that mentors don't always do the right thing.
