OK, so I f*ed up... why did it do this, and how do I fix it?

lots of steam from the iron without touching the cloth with the iron and brush the cloth. If you are not using a steam iron, dampen a cloth and lay it on the coat and press the iron very very gently to the damp cloth. This will create steam and remove the sheen.

Huh, I've never encountered a need to iron an overcoat made of reasonable material. Hope the previous suggestion works for you.

Yeah, well you've never encountered my brother. He took it and stuffed it into a box under 30 lbs of other stuff. I found it weeks later.

Just kidding. Please read up on fabrics, pressing, and steaming so as to avoid this in the future.
