The drivers need to be broken in. This can be done by listening to the headphones as normal or plugging them into a stereo.

I use a set of Philips drivers that I soldered onto the iPhone headset's wiring. They sound much better than the Apple earbuds, and took all of 10 minutes to assemble. If you're not totally ham-fisted the result is very clean. A how-to for anyone with initiative and basic soldering skills.

They don't meant the price criterion of the OP, but I bought a pair of Bose QC 15's that I'm using for the first time today. They are great. I'm sitting in an area full of noisy children while waiting on a flight, and I can't hear the little "angels", but my music sounds great.

I got the Klipsch S4's a few weeks back, not the S4i's with the mic. Honestly with iPhone 4 coming out next week I'd hold off getting headphones with remotes for your iPhone unless you don't plan on upgrading your phone. Also I'm not crazy about remotes on my headphones.

My S4's are great. The wire is very thin though so if you are "brutal" with your headphones you might want to think twice. Personally I prefer thinner wires. I'm also careful when I use them.

Was recommended to me by Tyll Hertsens of Headroom fame. It's his favorite under $100.

I tried them against the Shures, Monster Cable, and NuForce and preferred them.

Can anyone comment on how durable these headphones are?

I am looking for in-ear headphones sub $75 that are fairly durable and have solid sound quality. I tend to beat up my hedaphones; take them to the gym etc, so I want something that lasts. No need for a mic or for a volume adjuster on the cord.

The iMetals are very durable in my experience.

Drivers, from the tiny one's in in-ears, all the way up through big subwoofers, use pliable materials. These materials, just like a leather couch, can be broken in to become softer. With drivers, you allow the materials to move easier after hours of use, giving it more throw (moves back and forth further), and will benefit the overall sound.

Every study I've read points toward better sound after a break in period. Electrical break in, on the other hand, is debated among audiophiles and engineers. Hopefully I didn't just start a flame war.

Bought the iMetals in July and now five months later the sound in one earpiece is gone, looks like I am in the market for a replacement. Sound quality was good while it lasted.

I usually wrap the headphone cord around my ipod when not in use. Is it possible that this caused one of the buds to stop working? I noticed that the cord has begun to fray and expose the wires underneath it at the point where it meets the jack. I see to have durability issues with all my headphones so I am starting to think I may be the problem....
