iPhone case?

So, got myself a new toy. My Verizon contract ran out so I got an iphone.

Looking for some recommendations on a protective someting or other for it, they tend to get scratched up fairly easily. What I have seen is quite bulky (and a $ ripoff) and the film screens on the cover dont protect the back.

Anyone have a better solution? Something thin and unobtrusive, the phone is big enough.

This is the one I bought. The case is good (I like the fact you can easily slide the bottom of the case off and dock the iPhone). The screen protector that comes with it is not. I ended up buying one of the anti-glare protectors that fits very tightly against the screen (I had an employee at the Apple store install it so there would be not air bubbles).

Here are some other options from the same brand.

As I was finding those links, noticed this little doo-hickey. Looks like it might be nice for the desk at the office.

This is what I have and it came with two protective covers for the screen, as well.

Pros: I've had the phone since August and have dropped it plenty of times with no problems. I don't think it adds much bulk to the phone either, which was the big selling point for me.

Cons - the grease from last night's friend chicken dinner will definitely show up on the case so wash your hands. Oh yeah, the part of the case that flips up around the edge of the phone - it does start to scratch the chrome a bit.

Some people die by the Incase Slider or those gel things, but I think they're ugly and bulky. I don't mind if part of the phone that I'm NOT looking at gets a little scuffed, but that's just me.

Damn dude, that thing costs 35 bananas.

Also, the hinge where the charger goes, isnt that going to break off eventually?

So the piece at the bottom of the case slides off completely? What is the case made of and how thick would you say it is?

For the first three months I was using the rubber gel thingy combined with plastic adhesive sheet protector. It looked so ugly that I decided last week to just take it all off and go commando. The iPhone is really a nice looking piece of gear and it also goes much easier in and out of my pockets without the case. I'm sure it will get replaced as soon as the next gen comes out so if it gets scratched I won't have to live with it for very long. I did discover that the touch screen works a lot better without the protective film on it.

Thats actually why I kind like the first one better, the Griffin Elan Form... appears to be leather so its smoother. Also half the price of the apple version. Man do they rip you off. They charged the wife 10$ for those plastic sheets (3 of them!!) and I got them on ebay for 11 cents shipped!

Yes, it slides off completely. I was worried it wouldn't feel secure or stay on well, but it scores well on both counts. The inner case is made of hard plastic. There is a thin layer of leather on the outside. As for the thickness, I'd estimate 1.5 mm.

Here's a pic (not great since it was taken by the iPhone).

Dude, I didn't pay 35 anything. I got it on CL for $15.

I don't think I understand what you mean about the hinge where the charger goes. Nothing breaks off. There's nothing impeding the charger.

Dood... I didnt know you paid 15... now we're talking.

What I mean is the piece at the bottom that unhinges for charging, etc, wont it wear and eventually break from repeated use since its just a piece of plastic/rubber?

There's a full-body wrap for the iPhone:

A friend of mine has it on his Touch, and it's pretty good. I keep mine uncovered, and use a fitted bag from sfbags.com to carry it around. The aluminum-backed iPhones age gracefully, with the scratches and whatnot giving it a nice patina.

I got my wife a "Want" case: http://www.wantessentials.com/portela.html This is really a luxury item, but it is the one way she doesn't accidentally spill water on it, scratch up the face, whatever... Edit: Sena also makes a nice flip case for considerably less, as do Vaja and Miniot.

AH! I see what you mean now. Yeah, I don't use a dock. I just flip open the bottom piece (it's rubber) and leave it dangling off the edge of the table, and plug the charger cable in. Haven't had any problems, and I've had the case since August. It's still pretty tight.
