This. Apple has absolutely no interest in promoting the de facto monopoly of Flash on the web.

The simplest argument in favor of Flash support on the iPhone (and The Tablet, and everywhere) is that Flash is, by dint of its popularity and ubiquity, part of the web. But the best argument against Flash support is that it is harmful to the web as a whole to have something as important as video be in the hands of a single company, and the only way that’s going to change is if an open alternative becomes a compelling target for web publishers. Publishers use Flash for web video because Flash is installed on such a high percentage of clients; clients support Flash because so many publishers use Flash for web video. Apple, with the iPhone, is solving the chicken and egg problem. For the first time ever, there is a large and growing audience of demographically desirable users who don’t have Flash installed. If you want to show video to iPhone users, you need to use H.264. Apple isn’t trying to replace Flash with its own proprietary thing. They’re replacing it with H.264 and HTML5. This is good for everyone but Adobe. And yes, I know Flash does much more than just play video. But that’s the main thing everyone is talking about when they talk about Flash not working on the iPhone — video. And when you talk about other uses for Flash, you’re talking about serving as a software runtime, and whether you like it or not, Apple has a clearly stated opposition to third-party software runtimes for iPhone OS, and that policy seems to be working out pretty well for them.

I have been looking forward to this for a while, since I want one device to do a lot of things like web, music, video, basic text, games. I may end up getting an ipad, but there are two things that I would have like to have seen: camera and handwriting recognition. The text entry looks like it could be cumbersome for note taking or to do lists, and a camera would be one less thing I needed to carry.

Also, with this "no multitasking," does that mean I can't read and listen to music at the same time? That would suck.

Apple has put itself in a unique position among device makers in that the market (buyers, programmers etc) has to acquiesce to them, and not the other way around. if yuo hate them or think the products are crap, don't buy them I like my Iphone very much and am sure that I will like the IPad very much and use it more, if not exclusively, than my laptop.

You can. You can do this on the iPhone. What you can't do is run multiple third-party (non-Apple) applications at the same time.

Once again, I have an iphone. I have a laptop. I will kop the IPad and I will not be the only one. Are you guys really not seeing the "big picture" and all the **** that this thing could be made to do? Wake up in the morning, on the way to work have every newspaper that you need a button touch away. Check all your emails and attachments. Surf styleforum, purchase from an affiliate. Watch last nights episode of 24. On the way home, read a book, program your DVR/Tivo, order dinner etc. All while commuting. Can you do that comfortably on your Blackberry? I'm not even touching on the possibilities for mobile business people like salesmen etc. This thing is useless, according to you guys, i guarantee you that Sony/Nokia/Amazon are not taking this sitting on their hands.

I agree. Considering how well the Kindle has sold, seems like this is easily a better alternative. It sounds perfect for traveling. The only thing that's surprising is it might cut into the market for the Macbook Air.

I compare the iPad to the 13" MacBook Pro rather than the iPhone. While it's significantly lighter, I find the 13" MBP to be perfectly comfortable on the subway or anywhere else you might take this iPad. The convenience is really only relevant as a dedicated reader and, of course, those already exist.

And why the hell does it not have a camera?!?!

My god, am I underwhelmed by the iPad. This is as inessential a product as I've ever seen, but beyond that, it has some absolutely backbreaking failures that will make me judge anyone who buys one.

Big, Ugly Bezel
Have you seen the bezel on this thing?! It's huge! I know you don't want to accidentally input a command when your thumb is holding it, but come on.

No Multitasking
This is a backbreaker. If this is supposed to be a replacement for netbooks, how can it possibly not have multitasking? Are you saying I can't listen to Pandora while writing a document? I can't have my Twitter app open at the same time as my browser? I can't have AIM open at the same time as my email? Are you kidding me? This alone guarantees that I will not buy this product.

No Cameras
No front facing camera is one thing. But no back facing camera either? Why the hell not? I can't imagine what the downside was for including at least one camera. Could this thing not handle video iChat?

Touch Keyboard
So much for Apple revolutionizing tablet inputs; this is the same big, ugly touchscreen keyboard we've seen on other tablets, and unless you're lying on the couch with your knees propping it up, it'll be awkward to use.

No HDMI/HD Video Out
Want to watch those nice HD videos you downloaded from iTunes on your TV? Too damned bad! If you were truly loyal, you'd just buy an AppleTV already.

No Flash
No Flash is annoying but not a dealbreaker on the iPhone and iPod Touch. On something that's supposed to be closer to a netbook or laptop? It will leave huge, gaping holes in websites. I hope you don't care about streaming video! God knows not many casual internet users do. Oh wait, nevermind, they all do.

Adapters, Adapters, Adapters
So much for those smooth lines. If you want to plug anything into this, such as a digital camera, you need all sorts of ugly adapters. You need an adapter for USB for god's sake.
