No it doesn't. It brings color to the table but reading an E Ink display >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> LCD.

    Absolutely no contest!

    Why not?

the kindle isn't suited for me

my ebook reading is pirated pdfs and sometimes graphic novels/comics

when i buy i want the hard paper copy and wouldnt pay for a digital file

additionally this apple thing looks like it might be a good option for video at the gym. video ipod's screen was too small but this looks about gym-tv size. not sure how one would secure it, though

i'm not an apple junkie/user but this product is appealing

ok you live in japan...so it's not very easy to see how people outside of that country will use a product given their very strange tastes. how are they reading books on phones????

btw, a lot of guff was given to apple for introducing such a basic phone into an advance market in japan, and it still did well...there is a chance that those manga watching, whiskey from a can drinking, fellas may buy the ipad. i think there are other ipads like fujitsus but not at this price range with this level of features so they haven't sold well.

Other tablet computers here have run windows CE in the past, the newer ones are mostly running Windows 7 or XP. The iPad is not a revolutionary new device that fills a specific niche, its just a MID (mobile internet device)! There are a few Android/Windows CE/Ubuntu MIDs on the market today (with many more coming out later this year) that do what the iPad does, just as simply, and more.

Also Ed since you poo-poo'd the idea of multi tasking "who needs multi tasking" Im not sure about you, but I would really like to be able to umm I dont know listen to music while I surf the web, or if someone sends me a message while I am watching a movie, without MT I have to shut down my movie player to open the email/sms client. So you can see, multi tasking is a big deal. Shit even my crappy old phone from 07 has multi tasking (so I can watch TV and answer an email or check two emails at once, etc).

As for how they are reading books on their phones, there are two ways. One, a whole new genre of book was created here in Japan which was written by amateurs and posted online, chapter by chapter. Interesting thing about these serials is that they were often written on phones by bored students/OL/Salarymen on the train. A few years ago the publishing companies noticed they were taking a pretty sharp hit and saw this new market and started buying the books from the amateur authors. Some of these books were printed in paper form but many were just republished in cellphone format and can be downloaded for a couple hundred yen. Two, the publishers also started to release cell versions of new and classic books that were being published in paper form. Though that is not to say that people dont still read real books on the train.

I think the iPad is just too big to be hefting around on a train here or to use walking. Many business men use their laptops to do work on the train, but only if its not during rush hour. During rush hour you barely have enough space to hold your phone to your face to surf the internet, let alone a 10in screen. As for using it while walking around, most everyone carries a bag here. Operating a big cumbersome device while walking and juggling a bag, not gonna happen. Also being as its so big, many people like their privacy here and put a filter on their phone so only they can see what they are looking at be it porno or reading email. If a filter is even possible with the touch screen it would ruin the viewing angle for such a device.

The iPhone has reached a small degree of popularity here because its an Apple product. Compared to even a cheap phone its lacking many features: GPS, Osaifukeitai or an rfid chip so you can use your phone as your train pass/cash card/etc, One-Seg Digital Terrestrial TV tuner, infrared beam/reader for exchanging phone numbers/contact cards which might seem like a trifling matter but its important for exchanging info quickly between a new friend, possible date or business partner, dual cameras for video phone and taking photos, etc). The iPhone is also small enough that it can be operated by one hand, just like a normal phone which is too its advantage.

Anyway, there is probably more that I could say, but Im done talkin for now.

to addend that post, basically this ipad offers options that i need for my ebook reading that kindle doesn't offer - i need that normal-computer functionality and don't have a use for a dedicated reader

i know the kindle is fine for many

In all seriousness: The iPad is an ideal comic book reader.

for pirated comics i find the zoom options essential, as the text in many is often unclear in 100% zoom level. i wonder if the ipad size is enough to do a vertical scroll w/o horizontal scroll for a single page (held lengthwise). im not sure it is

This is what it took to bring you back from the dead?
Hah! Daft product announcements from The Church of Steve are to me what nuclear testing is to Gojiira - will awaken with a roar! Ok, maybe a feeble whiny post not a roar but I do have an online persona to maintain, after all, damn it. Plus less destruction to major metropolitan areas. P.s. why does Firefox want me to correct Gojira to Giraldo? P.p.s. I have been browsing The SF on and off all this time, real life has just been a bit of a cranky sow with me and my posting had fallen to the wayside...

Close, but not quite. This year, they could've easily sold this for $999, and people would still be lining up around the block to buy them come release day. It's the price everyone thought it would be all the way up until the announcement, after all. They could've then dropped the price gradually, just as they did with the iPhone. In fact, they basically say this themselves at the end of the iPad intro video when talking about pricing.

The reason Apple's pricing it at $499 instead of $999 is because, for the first time, they're going for market share rather than obscene profit. This is a market in its infancy, and they want to own it.

I know they are doing it for the market share, however, I don't think they'd be able to sell huge amounts at $999 in this economy. People would probably opt to buy a laptop for that price instead.

Would profits be that different? Sell less at a higher price or more at a lower price? They will probably make more selling more at a lower price, so it's win win for them.

A $500 difference in per-unit margin is pretty big. And again, they can just drop the price whenever they want to go mass market. Basically, they're just skipping the phase where they milk the early adopters for all they're worth this time around.

Just don't expect them to be as generous with every new product from now on is all I'm saying, lol.

Oh yeah, I agree with you. I just never understood the milking thing. Always seemed to be more in their interest to drop their price point and sell to a larger market. From talking to people, the two things prohibiting people from buying Macs in the past has always been: 1) price 2) one button mouse.

I just don't think they could get away with selling the iPad for near the price of their Macbooks, though they might have tried to the past is all I'm saying. I think they are making the right move with this.

    one button mouse.
Never understood this. Do people not understand that they can plug in any USB mouse they want?

In any case, every Apple mouse and trackpad today has a right-click equivalent built-in.

This is the stupidest product I've seen in a while. I can't believe it doesn't do multitasking.

And what prevents the screen from getting scratched?

I think if you're too computer-illiterate to even plug in a mouse, you probably wouldn't be able wrap your head around the idea of two buttons anyway [IMG]

Have you ever used an iPhone? It's the same glass, and it's practically indestructible. I've bashed my keys against it countless times, on purpose, to demonstrate this.

Its not much of going out on a limb to say that most computer users (esp people who buy apple for it's simplicity) do not know that you can really use 3rd party goods. I used to work at a computer store and people would ask me all the time "Which one of these keyboards works with a (insert brand name). Completely unaware that if it runs Windows, nearly every keyboard/mouse works. Most people think they are stuck with 1st party goods, especially with Apple since there is so much stuff that does not work on it. Explains the sales of that shit Mighty Mouse.

Tell this to the number of people with broken screens. Of my friends probably 3 of them broke their iphones because they dropped it.
