1200x800 would have been "non-standard" in terms of Apple's product line. They are trying to limit fragmantation as much as possible and limit developer hardache. That's why the mini has the exact resoution the iPad 1 and 2 had. So all apps will run on it, from day one. A new resoution would have caused developers to code new versions of apps and create new art assets. It's as simple as that.

Keep in mind that the app ecosystem is Apple's biggest competitive advantage when it comes to tablets. No one else even comes close.

Ah, that actually makes sense.

Plus, I believe there is a level of cost savings associated with them using the same panels. My understanding is they just cut them smaller for the mini. These panels have been produced long enough, that they are not as expensive to make anymore.

No offense, but that's not really an answer. And notice I asked why not a 1200x800 not "retina" ( a term I hate, but whatever).
I'm sure they will sell like hotcakes, and in a sense that answers why as well. But "because we can" is a pretty lame reason.

I'd say it's more "we should," than "we can."

I saw the iPad mini today. I love the size. It seems smoother than my iPad 2. If it would have had retina, I would have purchased one.
I want to go from a wifi only 2 to an LTE new model.
Do the mini and "4" have the same cameras? How does it compare to the iphone 5? Is the mini's processor an upgrade over the 2's?

what is everyone's keyboard strategies with this ipad mini? I'm thinking of getting that rubberized case from apple that lets it stand up too...and some kind of bluetooth keyboard (any suggestions)? there are probably some cases with keyboards in it, but I don't want it that bulky.

Read there is only a $5.00 dollar cost difference in making the mini screen than the 9.7" screen on the iPad.

Who knows if that's true or not, but you have to figure the savings add up when you are talking the millions and millions of units Apple is pushing.

i checked one out last weekend and wasn't impressed. I've got an iPad 3 and a Kindle HD and I don't see this replacing either of them. I was thinking it could replace both.

I'm pretty sure I'll get a mini soon. I handled both the mini and 4 in an apple store last week and I couldn't believe how much lighter the mini felt. It's the perfect size in my mind. The regular ipad is too close in size to a laptop, but without the functionality. I'd rather have an Air than an ipad 4.

Seriously, the iPad mini's size is perfect for fapping, I am 100% convinced that the geniuses at Apple conceived it for such a purpose. Left hand iPad mini, right hand iPenis mini.

Wonder what the experience is like for those of us used to a full size iPenis.
