Interesting article from a Verge editor on why you should not buy the LTE version of devices like the iPad.

    http://www.theverge.com/2012/3/15/2876459/shared-cellular-data-plans-editorial

EDIT: He makes some excellent points and it has be rethinking my decision to get the LTE version. Might call up Apple and see if they can change my preorder.

I am pretty sure you can't use facetime via cellular signal?

It's more then that. It's the fact that the carriers refuse to sell us bulk data plans we can share among devices. Neutral of any restrictions on how we use that data.

That fact wouldn't stop me from getting a 4G iPad, but I also agree that it's BS that current AT&T iPhone customers don't get a slight discount for their potential AT&T iPad monthly data plan (and ditto Verizon).

You are talking more about principle versus real world use. The only deterrent I see from getting a 4G iPad is if I wanted to FaceTime using the cellular connection.

Given what you've told us so far, I don't see how his points affect you in any way. Their more of a broad based commentary on net neutrality and the market as a whole

Oh yes you can Kurt. But you gotta wait until the Jailbreak is out for 5.1. Then, download Mi3G or 3GUnrestrictor, and go to town.

You are right, principle is a very large part of it. The other part is I don't like the fact that they charge an extra $130 for a chip-set addition to the hardware that can't cost them more then $50. These devices are expensive as it is and all the "upgrades" just make it more so.

At this point, I don't even know if I can change my preorder and don't want to get stuck at the back of the line again. So it likely won't matter and I will just go with what I have coming. Considering I have been on the fence about this, it's not that big of a deal.

God, these are going to be three PAINFUL weeks. :foo:

Maybe the article just served as a good reminder at how much this situation screws over us users and caused me to vent some about it.

I am still not sold on the idea of jailbreaking. To my understanding a single update to the OS can destroy your iPad... I've only used facetime for more realistic phone sex, don't think the public would like that. So I am find with only allowed to use it on WiFi, but I can see major shortcomings in the design by not letting it work via towers out of the box.
