invited to AmJack wedding

I have been invited to an AmJack wedding as a groomsman. The choice of 'tux' is exceedingly cheesy, and there will be plenty of grinning AmJacks and wiggers with square-toed shoes in attendance. Things could get ugly. Would it be bad form to change into something more appropriate, such as a blazer or sports jacket, flannels, OCBD, and tassel loafers, after the ceremonies have ended and the festivities have ensued?

You have to wear the tuxedo they provide? I would boycott the wedding on basic principle!

You obviously don't have much experience with wedding parties (or, more specifically, with brides who have planned their weddings down to every last detail - "What??!! He wants to wear his own tuxedo??!!! That will ruin everything!!!! I hate you!!!!!").

In answer to the OP (and I realize your post is tongue in cheek based on the devil smiley), I think you'll have to grin and bear it.

Can you at least take the tux to a decent tailor prior to the event?

You may want to regulate your use of this word.

Rented tuxedos are on that level.

And you're right, I don't have much experience with weddings. I only have one married friend and she's indian. The wedding was in the summer and I wore a nice linen/cotton/wool borrelli sportcoat.

Generally, rental places don't like it very much when you take their clothing to be altered.

Yes, I agree, but in this case it would be impossible and would cause problems for me far greater than any discomfort I might feel wearing their tux. I suggested proper tuxedos, business suits, anything, to no avail. At least I will be allowed to wear my C&J oxfords.

My inquiry was a serious one: would it be bad form to change into something more appropriate, once the reception starts? I guess this is an etiquette question.

The groom will definitely want you to be in the tuxedo for the pictures and for the introduction of the wedding party. And probably for the dinner if there is a wedding party table. I suppose you can change for the after-dinner dancing, but what would be the point?

Get really shitfaced before, during and after and just hope to hell that no photos of you end up circulating on Facebook, MySpace, or worst of all, SF.

How bad are we talking here? Pale blue with a yellow bow tie? 70's-era prom shirt?

And yes, it would be pretty rude if you were the only one of the groomsmen to change directly after the wedding. Though I guess you could always spill something on yourself and "just happen" to have a perfectly coordinated alternate outfit in your car.

Seriously- stop being such a *****. I have had to do the rental tux/bad suit that matched thing for friends. Have a couple drinks and have fun. It's about your friend, not about you.

I went to a wedding last weekend wear I had to wear a special tan suit along with a tie that matched the other groomsmen. I showed up wearing a blue bow tie (with the right tie in my pocket) about 15 minutes before the ceremony. After my friend recovered from his near heartattack, everyone had a good laugh.
