I saw a gentleman who looked to be in his 60s wearing a beautiful Inverness cape this morning. It dawned on me that I had only seen them worn in the movies before. People here think I'm eccentric when I wear a plaid tweed overcoat.

Some of the big hotels in Edinburgh have doorman dressed in capes, probably Inverness capes when its raining (most of the time).
They look very practical and comfortable, but short of people in pipe bands you don't see them, they are not really wearable by someone not in a costume or very eccentric.
I inherited a couple of pretty stunning Opera cloaks, even less practical, and apart from one Halloween party I have never found any excuse or reason to wear one.

I have to admit, I have a weakness for that type of thing, and am hoping to be the crazy old dude in the cape one day.

I thought he wore it well. He had a suit on underneath it.

I wore a cheap silk cape to an Edwardian Ball just the other weekend.

I wish I had an Inverness cape instead and would wear it when cold...to hell with what others think

if you want one enough you could have one made - http://www.invernesscapes.co.uk/

I think capes in general are pretty damn cool, the old police capes particularly are awesome. I don't think I am quite ready to wear one myself, I am all for ignoring what other people think but...

Your lawyer wears a cape?

Yeah. So what?

Who wears a cape?

He's very independent; he doesn't follow the trends.

Wow, reminds me of the Seinfeld episode in which George's father (Larry David) was walking around Manhattan in a cape.

The fellow in the TV adaptation of Nero Wolfe sometimes wears an Inverness and looks pretty cool in it. Sometimes. Sometimes even a larger-than-life character like him fails to pull it off.

I think this is one item you need a bit of age and some serious eccentricity to pull off well.

I think an inverness cape, so long as was restrained in colour, would be the easiest cape to pull of, because its not that different to a drovers coat or similar. You would want the weather to justify it though, otherwise you really would look stupid

There was a nice spread in the recent GQ Style (the better British edition) where some capes were featured out in the countryside. I'll scan a page or two this evening if I remember.
