Hey all,

I'm a new member and have only been observing until now. Now, I found out that I have a medical school interview in three weeks. When I go for it, I'd like to feel confident and not self-conscious. My current suit is from a department store, and it just doesnt fit right. It's probably because I lost weight over the last year. I'm 6'2 and 175lbs, so kinda slim.

Anyways, I was wondering if it's best to get the suit tailored, or should I just get a new one. If I were to get a new one, would Banana Republic be a quick and simple way to get a decent fitting suit?

Also, since I'm taller, is it better to get a 2 or 3 button jacket?

Any advice would be great, I'm going to start figuring out my options this week.

Thanks!

It doesn't matter when your interview is, if they want you, they'll take you. I interviewed and was accepted to UVA in March and interviewed and was accepted to Temple at the beginning of April. KEEP THOSE SPIRITS HIGH. Good luck!

I wouldn't sweat it. I'm sure people wear some heinous crap to those interviews and still get in. The fact that you are even worried about it probably means that you will look better than most. Good luck!

Please describe the current suit (material, color, etc.) and how it doesn't fit right. Pictures would be most helpful.

Since you are a student, no one expects you to have a truely elegant suit.
You can help the overall appearance by having whatever you wear fit properly so tht it looks as if it is yours and not borrowed from Shaq. Get it fitted at a tailor adjusting the sleeves and trousers at least. I doubt that they will be basing ratings on clothing. However, general fit will create the better impression. Replacing one "department store" suit with a new one will not really accomplish much. Spend the money on tailoring. Send the shirts to the laundry also so that they are pressed.

You should not expect to be able to buy a suit "off the rack" that fits. Everyone needs to have them altered. Some need more alterations but everyone needs them. If you really must get something new and are looking for inexpensive, look at the JAB stores. They are having some pretty deep sales now and the Signature Gold and Joseph models are pretty inexpensive for what you get. Get something in a solid dark grey or navy and it will serve you through your entire med school years. JAB should be able to fix you up with the tailor.

Most med school interviewees dress like crap in ill-fitting suits. I see them daily.
