Hey all, Browsing through items offered by a seller, I came across this interesting jacket. I've never seen anything like it. I wouldn't consider it 'classic', but the style is intriguing. The collar is especially different - anyone know what it's called?

I believe that's what's called, for lack of better term, a Nehru collar and it's been around for a while. I bought one such jacket a few years ago while I was an undergrad in Perth, Western Australia.

I bought (actually my parents) several such jackets approx. 30+ years ago, in bright outlandish colors--lime green, tangerine, etc.-- and the kinds of fabrics that originally gave "synthetic" and "polyester" a particularly bad name.

Caveat: my stepfather at the time owned several retail clothing stores catering to children and 'teens', and I was at the leading edge of these and other fanciful trends of the day (I was sporting 'bells' while all the other kids were still in straight legs... Never again.)

Feelin' groovy...

That is a Nehru or Mandarin collar. I have a Gucci military style jacket with that collar.

This collar had military roots but was adopted by the mod's in Swinging London. Also the Indians had this type of collar in their culture.

A Harris,

That was informative. Why is the starting price $25K? I've noticed a few of his auctions before, and while most are normal priced (though on the higher side), he always has that one for $25,000.

Oh, and what setting is the Nehru collar appropriate for?

Mr Harris,
Fascinating post about the Nehru jacket. Amazing what Ebay can turn up.

I have had a thing about lapel-less jackets ever since I was a teenager, and discovered a Mao-esque linen jacket at Kenzo that I wore till it died. Then I discovered Austrian "Bayerische trag" jackets. I got married in a jacket from Issey Miyake jacket that was Nehru-like, with an extra white collar that buttoned in. Now my favourite evening wear is a dark blue jacket with Mandarin collar from Shanghai Tang.

I think that the Nehru jacket, in a solid dark colour, is an excellent option for evening wear, although not if black tie is specified. But if you want a look that is smarter than a suit, while not going all the way to black tie or tails, then thisis a nice compromise, I believe. I think it is important that it fits well, and you have to find the right collarless shirt to go under it (I like Shanghai Tang's) but it works well for me.

I am very tempted by this coat, but I already have more than I need.

It's not an auction, it's advertising. Brilliant of Kyle really - this is the first time I've seen it done. I've got to applaud him for using ebay this way. They are so busy using us, it's good to see it turned on them once in a while...

In the mid 90's Armani had a nehru phase - I actually bought one in linen and wore it a lot (I was in architecture school and we were encouraged to dress oddly). It was very unconstructed, and if unbottoned could be folded to look like a lapelled jacket. It still hangs in the back of the closet.
