It's already going. Cheap Mondays are probably the leader in this, but a lot of makers have scaled back their prices (Rag&Bone is considerably cheaper than it was a few years ago, for example, especially their "entry level" (now RB6 instead of RB1) jean,) which is really not that hard considering the margin jeans companies get. Raw and one wash jeans have essentially no laundry costs (although resin washes are slightlymore expensive). The fact that Japanese companies like SDA, PBJ, and JohnBull can churn out high quality jeans that sell for about $160-$180USD on the domestic market (for the raw versions, processed versions are considerably more) should say something about the margins that companies make off jeans. Jeans and tees are where money is being made, along with accessories. If the most bang for your buck is your main criterion for purchases, just buy high end outerwear in the diffusion category, and wear cheap ass everything else.

The selvedge trend continues unabated, however, as clueless sales guys continue to perpetuate myths. Overheard at Riccardi's, a high end designer store (Vivienne Westwood, Great China Wall, Chrome Hearts, Paul Smith, lots of Prada and Prada linea Rosa, DSquared, Dolce & Gabbana sportswear, i.e. on the Eurotrashy side):

Salesman (pitching a pair of rather unremarkable PRPS jeans): "They are expensive, but that's because they are made of selvedge denim. That's very expensive to make, and is the sign of really good quality denim."

I resisted the urge to tell the customer that he can, conversely, find a pair of selvedge denim at the GAP, probably on sale right now.

Sad thing is that the PRPS jeans will probably hold up pretty well, and the customer will attribue this to the fact that they are selvedge jeans.

cheap is the new quality.

i am feeling this way myself lately.

a natural response to killing yourself with expensive gear, innit?

Very neato, it kinda sucks to see a $300 pair of jeans go up in flames.

Can someone tell me how PRPS became mall jeans?

After shopping around Beverly/3rd, I stopped at the Bev the other day to check out H&M. I walked past a denim store that advertised Bluebloods and decided to check it out. Never found the Bluebloods but saw about 30 pairs of PRPS in every combo possible along with the standard TR, R&R, and misc. eurotrash. Exact same story at Bloomie's. (Raw PRPS bootcuts were going for a steal at $260)

On a side note, as I was looking for the bluebloods I overheard the SA tell a customer, "Oh, the True Religions? Well, you can get the Billy or the Joey. Personally, I like the flar..." as I ran. FAR AND FAST.

I don't know. If I had to pick between the two, I think I'd take the Gap jeans.

it's very easy...
they're made by Akademiks.
it seems somehow nobody knows this...
I didn't know it was Akademiks per se but I always knew it was some urban brand. I don't know how they didn't start out in the mall rather than just end up there. When I think of PRPS, I think of LRG or some other street brand. Nothing wrong with that, but I am more inclined to look elsewhere for my jeans.
