Interesting. I think the use of the words "status symbol" is not exactly correct. Wealthier or generally more successful people can afford to get away with flouting more rules, but I don't think that flouting rules is itself a sign of status.

Interesting.... the best treatment I get in high end stores is when I'm dressed in sweats, t-shirt, and sneakers as opposed to nice casual clothing. I've noticed this on several occasions while shopping in both Chicago and NYC. Observed it today in NYC.

Lucky you, if I show up in my cycling to work clothes I always get treated like ****, if I go to work, change, then go back I get treated much better, even if it's been half an hour. I'd like to shop for nice stuff on my way to or from work one day.

I've observed this phenomenon only in high end stores. For all other shops and businesses it's the reverse.
