Inherited a Suit – Can Alterations Make It Presentable?

Hi all,

I am seeking advice on alterations for a suit I plan to wear to upcoming interviews. The suit is a 38R Hugo Boss Super 100, passed down from my father. I know it needs some alterations, but I have limited knowledge of tailoring, CM is something I am just getting into, so I don't even know what needs to be done. Reputable tailors are rare in my country, so I'd rather not go in blind and rely solely on their opinion. It seems a bit wrinkly overall due to the excess material, especially the back.

Here’s what I think needs adjusting:
  1. Jacket Alterations:
    • Waist suppression (I’m pinching about 3 inches on each side, but I’ve read 1–2 inches is ideal).
    • Sleeves shortened.
    • The jacket seems a bit long. Would it be considered traditional full-length, or is it too long for a modern fit?
    • There’s a slight issue with the shoulders—ends are raised slightly. Is this due to the jacket being too small, or is something else going on?
  2. Pant Alterations:
    • The hips appear too wide, and the seat needs adjustment.
    • I assume the pants are straight fit with a 1/4 break, but I would prefer a no-break look with a more tapered leg. Should I tailor the pants, or find a new pair?
Some have said I should just give up on this entirely and get measured for a new suit as well.

Thank you

I don't think you'll be able to do much about the shoulders.

The jacket looks about a size too big for you.

The length is OK.

It might be wearable with a bit of waist suppression, but it will never look great.

Thanks for your input. Just to clarify, when you say jacket is a size too big are you solely referring to the shoulder width being too wide for me? I thought I had the opposite problem because after I raise my arms the jacket will not come back down, it gets caught on my delts.

The shoulders look wide to me and I see a lot of excess fabric in the back and throughout the body of the jacket.

If it feels tight in some places, perhaps the cut isn't appropriate for your body type.
