Inexpensive winter hats that don't look stupid?

It may just be me, but I find surplus watch caps a little chunkier than I'd like. They're not bad, but I wish they made them a bit more fitted and in some different colors (brown, for one, and a green other than OD).

I'm a touque guy myself. I don't find them particularily stylish, but sometimes one needs to sacrifice style for preventing frost bite. Touques (or watch caps if you don't want to razzed about being Canadian

) are probably about the best chioce. Nothing else looks good and actually covers the ears.

I clip my hair down to #1 level in the winter precisely because I know I'll be wearing a toboggan.

Go to a military surplus store. They have some impressive winter head gear.

Do the military things pill easily. When I've bought cheap hats before, after a few weeks they look awful as they start pilling ? Easily get through 2 or 3 every winter.

What about those (fake) fur hunting things with the ear flaps which drop down. Always look warm as hell. Are they pricey?

yeah, this is exactly what i was thinking and i live in freakin' LA. but i'm with Arethusa. it may cost a little more but if you could find a thinner cashmere variant on the Watch Cap, you'd be good to go. assuming you didn't sacrifice too much warmth with it.

The USN watch caps don't pill, and I don't think they are that chunky. I had one for like 10 years and lost it, and bought another one. I also have a black cashmere watch cap (Geoffrey Beene, I think) that I got at Marshalls for ~$8 which is really really warm and light, but more delicate than the heavy wool.

Another one I have that I finally found is by some snowboard company, it's dark blue wool with green and grey stripes and the bottom edge is lined with 3" or so of thin Polarfleece. Very, very warm.

What's a toboggan? (The hat)

Roadkill hats look good on some people and look awful on most (including me) Personally I prefer a spodik or a ushanka to be worn on an old mans head.
If you could find a Karakul with earflaps, those would look dandy and toasty.

The ushanka is a good choice, albeit it'll get you noticed (which may/may not be a good thing)
