Are there any sources for relavitely inexpensive scarves? I have some, but they're rather nice cashmere ones, and I'd like some that I can be, well, less concerned about. Any suggestions would be welcome.

You could start from typical suspects like STP, BR, discount shops, thrift shops et.c.

Have you ever considered trying to knit one yourself? My younger sister knits and made what wound up being my favorite scarf for me. That it's handmade rather than machine-made makes the scarf much more visually appealing, in my opinion (kind of like slubby denim, I guess).

As long as you don't attempt anything too elaborate, a scarf is also one of the easiest things you could possibly knit, it will probably save you money, and its quality will be as nice as the yarn you choose.

Anyway, this might be a ridiculous suggestion, but it's a thought.

I never really did consider that, actually. I'm not really sure if it's possible to knit a scarf that doesn't look really chunky, but I'll look into it. It's something I'd like to try once or at least find out more about, but I just don't have time at the moment.

Hadn't thought of that either. Are you talking about just cutting a strip of heavy cloth and sewing the edges, or something else?

one of my fave scarfs is from H&M, multi color in earthtones (brown, olive, burnt orange mix) and was only $12. Soft as hell too.

I picked up a couple cashmere scarves from NYC street vendors for about $10 each. Still wear them after a year.
