Incredible portion size at Burger King

My family stopped by a Burger King today, and I found out they are offering a triple Whopper as well as a "Quad-stacker," which is a burger with 4 beef patties and 4 slices of cheese.

I thought, after the whole "Supersize Me" movie negative publicity, that fast food restaurants would at least be wary of offering stupendous portions.

I had a triple Whopper, by the way, for lunch. I'm skipping dinner tonight.

I don't really have a problem with this kind of offering. When I do eat fast food, I eat a *lot*. In the town in which I clerked, there was a diner that offered a deep-fried sub. They'd deep-fry an entire submarine bun, then slice it and load it with various stuff. My favorite was turkey salad, cranberry sauce, Swiss cheese, bacon, and mayo. I'd eat two entire deep-fried subs and a corn dog or chili dog whenever I ate there.

It's also not unusual for me to eat a half-dozen chili dogs at a time, or four Double Cheeseburgers at McDonald's, and follow up with a big dessert. And I'm not a big guy.

But, I don't eat fast food very often. If you eat a Triple Whopper on a regular or semi-regular basis, yeah, it's a problem. It strikes me as weird that "Super-Size Me" shocked so many people with the revelation that eating at McDonald's all the time was unhealthy.

One of the big problems with fast food is it's essentially paste. Just about all the fiber has been processed out of it.

Why would you subject your family to that kind of trash?

Goblin, you sure can eat.

My typical fare at McDonalds is 2 double cheeseburgers and a 20 piece nugget, washed down with two large Coke. I RARELY eat at fast food restaurants, though, perhaps 3x/month.

Today at BurgerKing my wife had the Angus burger with swiss cheese and mushroom. It was not as good as the name suggested (I had half of her burger

I don't have an issue with big portions. I do have issues with Burger King though. Once you pass the Whopper, it's all downhill in terms of taste.

I used to eat like this as a kid growing up. I remember taking road trips with a buddy in elementary school and we'd have In-N-Out Double-Double competitions. As kids in 4th grade, he and I could easily put away 3 of them without flinching. Yeah, "growing kids" and what not but that's absurd. During high schools is when I really started to pay attention to what I was eating and realized I ate not because I was hungry but just for the taste.

I'm not going to blame the fast food chains for how I ate, but I can't understand the need to pack as much food under one sandwich as humanly possible. Back then I probably would have done the quad decker for the hell of it. Then again, that's also why I'm 4" taller and 20 lbs lighter than I was then.

Case in point:

That said, I think the Whopper is actually pretty good for a fast food item, as are some of the Wendy's food items. (And I happen to have a soft spot for that Arby's roast beef...) But if you want to try and eat healthy at a fast food place, that's more of an option now than it ever was. The main customer still remains though: people who aren't calorie counters who want something greasy and tasty. That's why these places are still around and not going away.

My favourite fast food is Lebanese, of which there are more joints in Montreal than any other chain.

Subway is passable in a pinch, and Quiznos is decent if you HAVE to eat at a food court.

Well, I certainly think moderation is the key and do not find 3X/month too much. Back when I was young, single, and have higher metabolism, excessive calorie was not much of a problem.

Now, with a family and an expecting wife, convenience sometimes overrides attempts at eating healthy.

As I stated in the original post, I forego dinner after I indulge in a triple whopper, and a VERY delicious one at that. I maintain my BMI at around 26.
