What would be wrong with that, especially on a button-down shirt with a soft, unlined collar?

I do this sometimes, because my neck is a 17.5", but my body fits better in a 17" shirt.

It looks less formal and more casual if the tie space is too wide.

Shirtmaven's right, approaching 1/4" starts to look bad. It seems as if the top of the tie knot doesn't have a 'home', and tends to move you towards the casual spectrum.
