Various threads, both here and abroad, have made me realize that the level of my dress, and the level of my knowledge of dressing, has improved greatly due to my reading and participating in online clothing fora. A survey seems out of place in MC, so I thought I'd make one here.

The big difference is that I spend my money smarter and replace less than I used to.

I feel a lot more comfortable that I know what's "right" now but I still have a long way to go. My biggest change has been to get rid of my square-toed shoes which first evolved into some "old-mannish" AEs and now to a couple Santonis and AEs with more pointed toes that I really like. Also learned a bit more about proper shoe care. I match my socks to my pants and have branched out into some patterns/colors.

My fits are also better but I can't afford to replace too much of my wardrobe so I am doing it a bit at a time.

I've learned about what I feel is a proper break in my pants. I had too much before but, even then, it wasn't horrible.

Changed my ties knots from half-windsor to Pratt/Shelby or four-in-hand. Bought a clothes brush and a steamer. Learned about dry cleaning too often not being good and also switched to hang-drying my shirts. Stopped wearing black pants as often although I still do.

The one area I need to improve on a lot is suits/blazers. I know a lot more than I did before but I don't wear them often and haven't been able to explore/use my new knowledge and come up with my own formula through trial and error (like with the shoes). I feel that there is still a ton for me to learn in this area and I still feel a bit lost when some of the experts comment on fits - this is particularly true in terms of things like lapel width, length (to a lesser extent), button stance, and gorge.

All in all, I am very thankful to SF and the knowledgable posters here.

I'm not thankful at all! I spend A LOT more money on clothes and shoes than I used to - not to mention on tailoring services. Ignorance was bliss

+1

I def spend more on suits, shirts (from jantzen - even at ~$50 when you order 10 at a time it adds up), shoes, ties and tailoring than I did before reading here, but I must say i'm better off for it.

and that's mostly sale shopping! (thank you manhattan sales alert thread)

There's something to be said for being ignorant.

Someone above mentioned though, it's good for learning to find value too.

I now spend less on some items, but more on others. I also now have more places to shop online and in the cities I visit. I like the stuff I have, but could have easily done without. Ignorance was indeed bliss.

I buy mostly the exact same stuff and dress the same for most part now as I did pre-SF

tho the forum has made me aware of some brands (ie: Vass, Alden, etc) that I never would have bought before, so in that regards it's making me spend more $$ than I would have otherwise

Well, I certainly have been spending more this year. I'm actually somewhat scared about how much I've been spending (and that's with sales and discounts.)

However, I stopped buying things simply because they were on sale. I spend a little more but on things that are less trendy and that I can wear over and over again. I stopped buying graphic tees and Diesel shoes as well. Which I am thankful for.
