Does anyone have tips for minimizing taxes, customs fees, etc.? In this case, USPS is not an option. Thanks in advance.

If they're expensive, I'd encourage the shipper to minimize the stated value on the customs form.

I got hit for custom & duty every time UPS and Fed Ex were involved but never with USPS. The best way is to have co-opearative seller who's willing to declare aand insure a much lesser value.

... realizing, of course, that this is asking the seller to commit customs fraud.

Thanks for all the replies. What is the worst case scenario $ wise? Also, will customs start opening the package and inspecting the items? Finally, does Royal Air Mail = USPS? Answer one, two, three, or none

Never! Value is a subjective thing. I may not value what you value. Anyway, pledge, please do not ask anyone to make material misrepresentations to any government agent for the purposes of avoiding tax. I cannot and would not condone that sort of behavior. Nor would I permit anyone to engage in it on my behalf.

Royal Mail (like our USPS) should be the cheapest. I've had shoes shipped to me via Royal Mail for roughly 16GBP (that was without the box. From Germany it was Deutsche Post (DHL) for about the same price with the box.

You can go to the Royal Mail web site & check the prices. You will need to know the package weight in kilos.

Royal Mail and its parcel branch Parcel Force appear to be much less likely to be inspected for duty by Customs. Just an observation.

Thanks again for all your replies. Does Royal Mail go through our USPS once it reaches the States? nd what exactly is Parcel Force? Sorry for all the questions.

Grimslade, point taken.

I'm pretty sure there is a $400 exemption to either import or export for personal use. Check with the department of state.

Nope, unless you're accompanying the goods you bring in (i.e. stuff you bring back from vacation). Then you have a $800 per person exemption.

Royal Mail does go thru USPS once on our side. I got my package from the UK in 5 days.

Parcel Force is what you would use once packages go over the weight limit for Royal Mail, IIRC.

I was just told by UPS that there is a $100 gift "exemption" and a $200 general exemption. Go figure.

Does Parcel Force also come through the USPS once the package is in the USA?
