I can't imagine not wearing an undershirt.

Well, I can, but not with a white shirt that would develop antiperspirant stains in short order.

Would much rather see a dude's undershirt peeking out than big circles of sweat under his arms.

If its stains you worry about, then switch to a non aluminum based deodorant. Contrary to popular belief it is often the over use of anti-perspirant, that causes excessive production of sweat.

Sunspel does the trick, and i have some from 2xist that are form fitting. added bonus is that mine are thin material and dont have bunched up seams so they dont trace a line under your dress shirt

Yeah, really. Who wears undershirts? First of all, it is the peak of summer and the last thing I need is yet another layer. Second of all, who needs the added tucking complication of yet another layer? Thirdly, yuck. Just, yuck. If you are going to sweat out your dress shirts, maybe you need to reconsider your wardrobe entirely.

It depends on your location. Here in Tokyo in the summer it frequently gets to 35C (95F) or more and is very humid. The humidity means that just getting out of the direct light of the sun doesn't really help; the heat feels like it's in the air. You can't escape.

Moving around outside in this kind of heat and humidity, most men sweat steadily. An undershirt takes the sweat and wicks it away from the skin and dramatically reduces that wet and sticky sensation on your skin in those areas where you perspire the most. Yes, it is an extra layer and in theory that should make you warmer through insulation, but because of the wicking effect most people find (through experience) than in this kind of climate wearing a close-fitting undershirt is more comfortable than not wearing one. YMMV.

Whether you find it comfortable or not, if you don't wear an undershirt in hot weather you will be walking around with enormous sweat patches around your armpits, back, chest etc. You see this all the time with summer visitors to Japan. Personally, I find that disgusting but you may find it looks quite acceptable.

Cut: find a close-fitting, U-neck or deep V-neck T-shirt made of light material. These are good.

It must be in contact with your skin and should cover your armpits and under your arms so that it wicks the sweat away. A wife-beater style probably wouldn't work well.

Colour: heather grey. This is not noticeable under a white dress shirt whereas the sleeves of a white undershirt are clearly visible under a white dress shirt and that's not cool.

    Regards
    TD

Everyone is taking about sweat... but depending on the shirt color and fabric thickness, you can also see nipples showing through. As well as, someone mentioned, tattoos.

These are also good reasons for undershirts.

    I think they are great.

And regards to wicking... I have been thinking of finding 5 tight fitting polyester shirts to use. Like underarmor or something. This insures better wicking and since it's synthetic, it dries WAY faster than cotton. This should help avoid sweating through the undershirt and still sweating on your dress shirt. I'm not sure if I'll take plunge, but others might be interested. Should work.

    Wifebeaters FTW.
Wifebeaters do nothing to protect the underarms of your shirts from sweat or antiperspirant stains. And before someone chimes in with "LOL don't sweat then!!!111" let me preemptively ask if you have ever spent time in LA in the summer (other than this year). EDIT: Even worse in humid environments, as outlined by the Tokyo-based poster above.

I'm a slim guy and brooks brothers slim fit supima cotton t-shirts are fucking perfect. They are longer than hanes which make them great for tucking when you need to and the material is quite good. My only complaint is that they only come in white.

To get back to the OP point.

The same idea with everything you try on. If I buy a winter coat I try it on wearing what is normal for the winter. A summer jacket OTOH needs to fit with much less on.

    I don't wear undershirts.

I don't use staining "antiperspirants." Natural sage or citrus deodorant works great...if you are a self-drencher, get your underarms Botoxed.

I don't have tattoos or chest mat.

I try to keep sufficiently fit so that a simple walk in warm weather is not a life and death struggle with nature.

My tailored clothes for summer are constructed and made from materials that are light and airy. If you can manage a summer-specific wardrobe, that's very helpful.

Unless your day absolutely requires coat and tie every day, or you have made a blood oath to the Harrumphing Tenets of iGentry, another trick is to dress more casually on a very hot day.

A good trick to getting a more form fitting t-shirt is to size down.
