There was an interesting discussion on a Minneapolis radio station this afternoon that started off with Johnny Damon's contention that a ballplayer, even an ugly one, can get all the women he wants. It then shifted gears to how many rock stars probably got into music simply to be assured of a steady supply of female companionship.

A real debate sprang up over David Bowie's babe-magnetism factor. This program was a bunch of jock-sniffers who normally restrict their yapping to Latrell Spreewell's "got a family to feed" whining or Randy Moss' antics. I didn't hear the end of the program, but I'm guessing these guys have some latent (and perhaps creepy) attraction to Mr. Bowie. His manner of dress perhaps?

I've always found Bowie's sense of style entertaining; his music has been a soundtrack of sorts for my adult life, as horrible as that may be to admit. Any guy who was born on 8 January can't be all bad.

I'm a big Bowie fan - but he must have a new album coming out soon or something. MSN had a whole section devoted to his career the other day as well.

These things don't happen by accident - is he releasing a box set or something?

Not to highjack my own thread, but surely the number of babes Bowie has nailed over the course of his career must run well into four figures. The number of men probably doesn't exceed two figures, so those snow-bound closet cases can relax. Don't forget that Bowie's celebrity was at its height during the Peak Groupie Era of the mid to late-1970s. To this day I remember the line of glittery, high-heeled beauties I saw being escorted backstage by a bouncer at a Roxy Music show in Detroit in 1973, and God knows what happened after that.

More than most, Bowie's look is difficult to separate from his stardom. I'm sure REM, say, or Conor Obst or Dave Mathews have slept with plenty of women, but this is clearly due only to fame and perhaps a certain coolness factor, not their style. Bowie is in another league with respect to all these things, which is why Imam is married to him and not to me.
