Wow, really, I'm the only one who keeps it? David Wells paid a ton of money for a Ruth signed ball, then got Aaron to sign it, now Barry. Said the only other guy he might let sign it is ARod. Awesome. The guy who caught Hideki Matsui's 100th the other night traded it back to the player in return for a signed ball and signed bat...and it didn't matter because the same guy caught Robinson Cano's HR from the same night. Also awesome. Tom

Probably, but there's a long-standing tradition of allowing fans to keep balls hit into the stands. It would be a huge PR negative to try to backtrack on that. At the end of the day, I suspect what what MLB pays out to recover a few balls of historical significance is relatively limited in terms of the league's over investment in maintaining good will, etc.

Never underestimate Bud Selig's ability to implement "a huge PR negative."

It won't appreciate for long if A-Rod keeps going the way he's going. Nobody's going to want the 2nd place ball.

Anyways, I foresee Bond's last home-run ball being the big moneymaker. What would you pay more for: Hank Aaron's 715th home-run ball or his 755th home-run ball? Sell the ball now before he hits another home run and then retires immediately afterwards.

Really? Was Aaron's 755 worth more than his 715?

Good question, don't know how to check this but it wouldn't surprise me and I'd be willing to bet a black super 180's Kiton suit that Barry's last homer is worth more than the record breaker.

I don't know, but Mark Mcguire's 70th sold for over 3 million while his 62nd was valued less than a million.

Interesting. I guess it makes sense: the record-holding ball is more significant than the record-breaking ball.

And being the mlb, it needs all the good will it can get.
