IF GQ and ESQUIRE were your only source for sartorial advice, how would you dress?

Since the majority of average men probably think GQ and such is the authority on menswear, how would you dress if this was your only source of information. I personally see them as nothing but catalogues alot of the time. I've noticed I get a free GQ every other month it seems yet I do not subscribe whatsoever.

If those to mags were all I knew, I would wear a lot of stuff from Macy's and Dillards!

That seems to be my feeling lately. A lot of big ads.

I'd spend a lot more on clothes since I'd be redoing my wardrobe every quarter! And I'd have a wardrobe made of nothing but unusual pieces with no basics.

(Well. That hits a little too close to home, but I'm getting better.)

Since I don't fit into Prada or Gucci I am not sure what I would do.

I would buy a lot of clothes that would look dated in 6 months and be poorer for it. There are some decent items from time to time in Esquire I must admit. Maybe I could wear Lobb then.

It would depend on which ads you decided to pay attention to.

Across the board, if the American male dressed to the level of either magazine, Americas sartorial landscape would look better than it does now.

Though not as refined as the tastes usually stated here.
I find some of Esquire's points rather heplful.

Though I don't look at the mags often, it seems that most of the models are slim pretty boys. I when to a NM fashion show recently and all the models were slim pretty boys, but most of the audience were middle age men dressed in for the lack of a better term preppy or trad style. Since I was 12, I've been too large to fit in those slim looks.

I subscribe to both, although I think GQ isn't the magazine it used to be. Fortunately for me during college in the `70s, I worked in a very high-end men's clothing store in Century City and learned a lot about good clothing taste and style. At the time, we were the exclusive Lou Myles source in Southern Cali. More fortunate, perhaps, is the fact that my wife, who has impeccable taste, is a personal shopper at Saks!

I'd miss Esquire more than GQ, but I think I'd do OK without them.

In general, my tastes now run to Isaia, RL Purple Label, Dunhill, Armani, Zegna, Canali, and Corneliani.

I agree. Years ago, when I went on a GQ kick, it raised my consciousness about sartorial style considerably and, taken with a grain of salt and adjusted for my own tastes, led me to develop a vastly improved sense of style.
