Which would look at home with anything - greatcoat to chinos? I'm fishing around for ideas.

Have a look at Filson models 256 or 257 (through Cranes Country store, for the service and discount). I have the 257, as do a few forum members, and really like it.

I'm curious on two levels - not just what you have, but what you'd have if you could have any bag.

I've had a look at, and am about to buy, the Swaine Adeney Paternoster. I'm not convinced of the style but I figure I'll give it a try. I'd appreciate more casual suggestions as well.

It should accommodate your laptop nicely, not too big or too small, and the reason I say this is because there's 17" laptops and there's 10" (or even smaller I think) notebooks

Not a bag per se, but since you say you're interested in what we have I carry my laptop (15" Vaio FZ) in a vintage Coach portfolio like this one:

I got sick of carrying a briefcase all the time when all I really transport back and forth from home is my computer and a few documents. The portfolio is a good solution.

Would be good, except I do carry a not obscene, but a fair amount of crap with me as well.

My 13.3" MacBook (+ case) fits perfectly into either of the 2 laptop-specific compartments in the 257. However, a MacBook pro (15...don't know about 17") should fit well into the middle pocket, although it'll be more liable to encounter pencils/whatever you'll put in the internal organizer pouches.

The one I have is the 15" and tried to look up the dimensions of the bag, but it doesn't tell you the compartment dimensions. I was hoping knows if the 15" would fit.

Thanks anyway

257 is 16" wide. It easily fits my 14" laptop. Howeverm It's turned out to be a tight fit for legal size documents, to my chagrin. The Swaine Adeney is beautiful.
