Hi,

I just bought these shoes on a lark, as they appeared to be Aldens. Can anyone confirm?

The seller claims that they are made in england, which would suggest they are not aldens. Also, I thought Alden used a naming, rather than a numbering, system for their lasts, whereas these clearly say last no. 1978 inside...

Because they are English, if they are marked 10.5 inside, they are going to fit an 11 or 11.5 in all likelihood.

I sent him an email asking about the sizing, he doesn't know where they are from. So I tried to determine who used 1978 as a last number. No luck.

The work strongly resembles Alden though:

Any thoughts on the maker? I've seen the sole and they are not bench or hand grade.

I only paid 20 bucks shipped, so no big deal.

With all due respect, I see the shoes as not looking that similar to ALdens. For example, Alden uses a much more rounded toe box while the toe box on the shoes you bought are more squared. If I were quessing, I might think they are Sargents.

Perhaps Lloyd & Haig. They are definitely not Aldens.

Those are vintage Church's Custom Grade.. I just purchased the exact same ones from eBay last month. They have arrived and cleaned up quite nicely, must have been made before the brand took a nose dive in quality. Here is a link to the auction I won:http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll...m=140048772895

My thought exactly. In addition to the toe box, the shoes have a graceful curved line of brogueing that I think of as unique to older McAfee shoes (before they got bought out by the Prada/Church's conglomerate). I've got two pairs of McAfees with similar "lines."

Thanks for all the replies guys. I don't usually buy things off of ebay, or used either, but after reading all of the great deals that can be had there, I gave it a shot. My wife thinks I'm crazy.
I'm hoping these clean up well also. 20 bucks seems a steal.

For $20, definitley worth a shot. Post pics after you've received the goods and given them a shine...

Surely the lack of a width fitting (I do not see one) suggests these are not by Church or any other high end maker.

The 'last' number looks suspiciously like a date. At that time most British high street shoe shops would have carried brogues like this.
