I think I've hit a wall.

In the past week I've bought two more suits, a bunch of ties, a new shirt, pocket squares and some other stuff and I feel...well...sated. I mean, I could buy more, though my closets are now almost groaning with the pressure of holding more, but I think I've hit a limit.

I've felt like this before and then later gone on to even greater heights but this time might be different. I think I have everything I need and, perhaps more importantly, want.

Anyone ever feel this way before? And let me guess, the cure was to go out and buy something, right?

Always more hair of the dog, if not the entire pack.

my new years resolution was to not buy anything over $100 all year....that lasted about 2 months

I def have everything I need, but I always end up seeing something I want, even tho I have most everything in that category too....it's a vicious circle.

I'm trying to curb purchases of items I already own, aesthetically. I have a tendency to buy the same sort of gear in multiples, just by different makers.

I think everyone starts to experience a law of diminishing returns with their purchases. I've definitely hit the wall with my shoes, given the limited amount of space I have available, number of unworn shoes sitting on the shelves, and personal finances. Remember, although we like clothes, our money can be saved or spent on oher pastimes or hobbies.

There is also the matter of feeling like you have a "complete" or "near complete" wardrobe. I'm sure everyone can do a bit of tweaking, e.g. I need a new tan belt or solid navy grenadine tie, but for the most part, capital purchases such as suits and shoes approach a replacement (upgrades) or collecting phase once you achieve a two or three week rotation with seasonal adjustments. I'm close to the latter phase, and, after my last sportcoat binge, I'm pretty much resigned to using a eBay sales or B&S sales to finance the rest of my purchases for 2007.

this is a great thread. we should turn it into a Shopper's Anonymous confessional. my latest attempt is to not buy anything clothing related until mid July. two days and i'm good so far. but i've already started making exceptions like a good deal on a suit.

I get that way every once in a while. Too many news toys and you lose the desire to visit the toystore. Don't worry, it passes.

I thought a pair of Stuart's Choice boots and three (am I counting right?) pairs of Stuart's Choice shoes would hold me for a while. Wrong. I'm about to start on bespoke shirts, and have my eye on a few super discount suits. Then the Hickey Freeman sample sale is coming, and a likely sportcoat purchase or two. And that's not counting all the sales stuff I'll keep if it doesn't sell (Yes wife, even though I wear a tie once or twice a week, I really do need a half dozen Holliday & Brown ties).

suits, ties, cuffs, squares, shirts? cmon

shoes man shoes.

that is when the 'crack' addiction really kicks in.
selling shoes to get other shoes. buying shoes and changing mind and selling shoes. buying shoes and petting the shoes. hiding shoes from significant other.
when they find out having a deep sense of shame and remorse, crying to sleep vowing never to get shoes again, only in a few days to start peeking at shoes porns behind their back and buying again, stashing them.

aside from some ties, I have bought nothing this year. I haven't bought a suit in four or 5 years, I have bought 10 shirts, 2 pair of shoes, one pair of cufflinks and less than 10 ties in the past 3 years.

before that, I was wild.

strangly enough, most of my clothes are older than my son - I think I may see a connection.

I sometimes get that feeling too -- particularly when I receive my cc bills! 2006 was a bit of a shopping bender for me. This year thus far, I've been more controlled in my purchasing. No major items like suits, but I have picked up a pair of Heschung suede shoes, a Moncler jacket, an Ozwald Boateng tie, a Paul Smith shirt, another pair of APC jeans, but I think that's about it.

It's not that I don't want things, but a real contemplation about if I have that item, will it change my life (figuratively speaking, of course). I'm focused on buying fewer but higher quality items. Of course, ideally, I'd want many higher quality items, but the bank account does not allow that now!
