Hey all, wanted to get your opinion on a recent experience I had with my tailor.

I started a new job a week ago after being unemployed for 5 months and picked up a new sport coat from Cavour to celebrate. The jacket fits me well off the rack, I just needed the sleeves hemmed.

So I brought my sport coat in and explained what I wanted and they charged me $80 just to hem the sleeves with non-functional buttons! I initially balked at the price but they explained that because the jacket had hand sewn elements they needed to charge extra to recreate the effort. Is this a reasonable and fair price or have I just gotten cheap? Thanks in advance!

Some tailors are more expensive than others and some are more skilled than others. The cost will also depend on your local market.

$80 is probably on the high end for that type of alteration in most places, but anything hand sewn will require more labour.

This is surely obvious, but you can and should ask about prices before getting any work done.

In NYC for a Cavour jacket, I paid $55 to shorten sleeves and $20 to put on buttons.

Thanks for your time and the replies all. Sounds like I need to call around to get prices and apply some common sense in the future. Have a great week!

How do you prefer trousers to be finished?

  • Plain hem

  • Cuffed (1.5 inches or less)

  • Cuffed (more than 1.5 inches)

  • No preference, as long as the proportions work
