Has anyone tried Everett & Jones bbq or any of their locations? Apparently they made some list on bon apetit but I've never seen them really. There were only a couple of bbq spots worth going to in east bay, and this wasn't one I heard of.

I'm a big fan of Everett & Jones. My favorite location is the one on San Pablo (on the corner next to University) in Berkeley. It's a dumpy old joint that is easy to miss with a big brick fireplace so the place smells of 40+ (50+??) years of smoke and BBQ sauce. The menu is limited to chicken, hot links, beef brisket or beef ribs and a choice of hot, medium or mild sauce. Its served with a scoop of potato salad and two slices of whole wheat bread on a paper plate. (it used to be two sliced of white Wonder bread). No booze, just sodas. Sometimes they have small pies.

You can buy their sauce at most area grocery stores, but TBH it just isn't the same without that wonderful smoky meat coming out of the BBQ after hours over the wood burning fire. They have a larger, newer location over in Jack London square which has live music on weekends but I've never been there.

My mouth begins to water when I am within a couple of blocks of the place.

Chapter 100 in the NYT's mission to **** on SF. (Not that that's necessarily hard.) They've not taken kindly to the power and relevance shifting away from Wall St. to Silicon Valley.

JFC. It was Matt I believe that said that the reason San Francisconians are so pissed off all the time is that they realize they'll never be relevant.

The entirety of Silicon Valley could slide into a lake of fire tomorrow and the world would not miss a beat. What's the worst that would happen? We'd have to start taking taxis again? Oh dear.

SF downtown is only 11% above normal YTD and but at 90% of the season total we are still coming up a bit short short. A bit more sunshine would be nice but I'm happy we don't have to worry about yet another year of drought.

@lefty - You could just as easily be talking about the Eastern seaboard. Or the middle of the country. If you are a nihilist it’s all true. Not sure it’s a meaningful thought experiment though.

The Bay Area has a lot of issues but lack of relevance isn’t one of them. If anything that’s an issue particular to NYC. It’s never regained its prominence post the Great Recession and is desperate for attention.

The reason people are angry in the Bay Area is because everywhere you turn there is a lottery winner who thinks he earned his wealth.

True. Especially your last sentence. Lottery winners and trustafarians.

Oh joy...Thousands of New Millionaires Are About to Eat San Francisco Alive: https://www.nytimes.com/2019/03/07/...l=california-today&nlid=5661708920190308&te=1

My friends and I just had a conversation about this article actually. It's really sad. Some of them work for these unicorns, but will never see the type of money suggested here. Even though they will win the lottery, their ticket wasn't good enough. Folks that have worked for airbnb for 7 years, Uber for 5, pinterest for 4, they are about to get priced out of owning a home in the bay.

It also came up that companies on the peninsula didn't have this problem since the employees lived in less dense areas and commuted. All the others will want to stay in SF cuz that's where they work.

Sad.

In addition to not being able to afford a home, I know young Bay Area couples where they made a couple of million in tech, bought a house, but both have to continue to work their butts off to support a comfortable but not extravagant lifestyle in the Bay Area with private school, a couple vacations, high property taxes and the cost of raising a couple of kids.

I spent most of my life in the bay, and if it wasn't for having almost my entire network there, I wouldn't want to head back...

My parents can't move out of the house they bought 30+ years ago cuz their whole network is there too. They have to keep working to pay property taxes. My grandparents have to live nearby cuz they're not really able to live without my parents assistance, and their government assistance is barely enough to cover food and rent, let alone medical expenses.

Isn't life grand?

Your parents don't benefit from that proposition that froze property taxes when they bought that house 30+ years ago?

Oh snap!

I do understand the "global datasphere" ... tubes, right?

I know how to use a rotary phone, wield an axe, build a fire from nothing, change a tire and am armed. I also have all my old Playboys. If the interwebs went away tomorrow, I'll be fine. How are you going to function without yelp telling you where to eat?

Am I the only one that hates Yelp and thinks Yelpers are the worst?

lol not gonna lie: i was actually 'yelp elite' at one point. maybe i really am asian after all.

i went to one yelp elite event at my local neapolitan pizza joint. it was just as horrific as you would've expected--a bunch of twenty-something second-tier yuppies who wanted to be treated like vips or something. i mostly talked to a server i knew there (i'm pretty sure she got fired because she liked talking to people more than working). i grew to hate yelp so much i emailed them asking to delete my account. i got some kind of "but you're elite!" response, which was amusing. heh.
