In the absence of a plan of action, every idea is equally meaningless, including throwing away the cigarettes, smoking the cigarettes, eating the cigarettes or smoking them out your arse.

Come Monday morning and you're going to smoke anyway.

OP I never really understood the addiction with cancer sticks but I encourage you to stop. Maybe you could smoke less and less everyday eventually working towards like 1 cig/day or 1/2 cig per day. Here's a thought; would you want your children to smoke? if no, then you're setting a bad example for them. if yes, then by all means light up and blow smoke in their face.

    just my 2 cents.

I did not take you for a smoker, stitch.

It's not that hard. The biggest thing is not to be a pussy about it. No matter what you do, there will be hard days. That's when you need to nut the fuck up. People get in trouble when they start making excuses for themselves, or telling themselves that it's okay to quit because it's such a difficult thing to do. That dog don't hunt.

    Things that help:
-Minimize free time: the hardest part for me was getting past lighting up whenever I was just waiting 5 minutes for shit to happen (the bus, meeting a friend for dinner, etc.)
    -Don't hang around smokers: duh
-Cut out any drinking: another duh
-Exercise: endorphins and all that good jazz
-Sex: it's just good to have (though I occasionally miss the post coital smokerettes)
-Sprints: it's like punishment for smoking.
-Put your cigarette money toward a fun purchase instead

Also, throw away the fucking cigarettes. You know that smoking them gets you no further toward your goal.

firstly, thanks everybody (ok almost everybody) this is a big help. keep the wise words coming. i need someone who will agree to punch me in the penis hole if i smoke again. any volunteers?

    but true. good point.

my wife is also not a fan of the word either. she isnt nearly as low brow as myself.

IME, it help to get you started but once you are down to 1 or 2 a day you need a new strategy or you start building up again. then it becomes a never ending cycle. thanks though. but the wife and kids are a definitely a motivator. gotta keep that in mind more often.

thanks gale. yeah you arent the first to not expect me to be a smoker. that would be my parents :(

There are a million medications but they are temporary fixes. It's more changing your way of thinking. A big part of smoking is identity. I find that identifying yourself as a smoker is the hardest habit to break.

And don't let an occasional slip up screw up your progress. If you get tempted and have a cigarette you aren't starting from the beginning.

There was another thread about quitting a couple months ago so you may want to search for that one as well and one interesting bit I found was (and i'm paraphrasing):

Don't quit because you have to but because you want to.

There's a lot of truth in that. Best of luck and keep us (much to the chagrin of some here) posted. I'd be happy to read upon progress.
