Now I know I previously said (many times) the one black shoe should be the EG Chelsea on the 202. I know I said never to blutchers (especially ones that pretend to be elegant dress shoes). Right now I own: EG Midfort 82 dark oak (have box) AS Bristol milkshake/tan (have box) RL Redway/C&J Cavendish polo tan suede (have box) Magnanni Casillas tan penny loafer (have box) RL Stanton (about to toss), (have box) I ordered the EG Malvern in chestnut (just have to pay for them) so now I need a black shoe. Please talk me out of getting the EG Coombe and recommend (with pics and Edward Green) something alternative. Thanks

First response and I'm already breaking the rules. Get a captoe. C&J Audley or Hallam. Go try them in the store off 5th.

If you're going to get one black shoe, at least get a bal, dammit.

the stitching job is TERRIBLE.

Acceptable on Allen Edmonds, definitely NOT on EG.

OK, this is working.

The only reason I haven't paid the $450 for the Coombe is that it's a blucher. No experience with Vass or St. Crispin and not in a position to test the waters, but thanks. I'm over C&J or else I would have gotten the Clifford form B&S that were almost free, but thanks.

gdl will say Iverness in black. EG said they have the Russell & Chelsea in black. Was hoping for something with some kind of brogueing. Oh, the dilemma.

Honestly, the ones you posted are just fine. I would get them if Brown had my size,I still kick myself for missing the brown ones, milfords I think. Those were great and at $450 were a bargain.

The black Coombe are currently ~$450 and a steal (if they weren't a blucher, would kop)

How do you prefer trousers to be finished?

  • Plain hem

  • Cuffed (1.5 inches or less)

  • Cuffed (more than 1.5 inches)

  • No preference, as long as the proportions work
