It will let the tie bar shine
& gives u freedom to generate visual interest with the pocket square since the shirt is plain.

What color pocket square you guys recommend with a black tie?

the tie may very well blow your budget. I like the knit ties with phat weaves, not the ones that look like socks.

Phat weave

sock like ewe

A ps with contrast edges could be a strong look. web search pocket circles they are easier to fold.

If you wants some flair (doesn't seem like it though).. burgundy, royal purple, and mustard go with grey. I listed them in order of safeness. ;-)

Get a black silk knit or a black silk grenadine. Extraordinarily versatile ties. The rougher weaves keep it from being plain (and funeral attire), while the black keeps it sedate, and as far as color matching, simple. Don't get a square end tie. Very limited usefulness with regards to dressing it up.

Knit:
Kent Wang, $65

Grenadine:
Kent Wang, $75 (though if you have the time, I'd go with Sam Hober)

That's not me in the picture lol.

I'm 5'9 180lbs (fit)  2.5in is too narrow of a tie on me?

Probably, but if it's patterned, the width is deemphasized somewhat.

^ No, it's ok. It's unnecessary from a practical point of view as the vest will keep your tie pinned down, but if you're wearing the tie bar for aesthetics, then carry on.
