I just want the pants - should I buy the jacket as well?

...with the exception of their suits, which are still fused pieces of rubbish, but not made in China AFAIK.

I like some of their fabric patterns, but once you handle the cloth - yikes!!

When they were here, about half the stuff was made of very nice Australian merino in HK, but the other half was made in Australia.

I bought a few things...maybe mid 1990s.

What's the company? The policy is most likely illegal. It definitely will be illegal when new clarity in pricing laws take effect.

I'm not saying it is definitely, but it was the line I got from two seperate stores, so it sounds like a company policy. The store is Farage - I think they have a store in Doncaster.

I agree - if it isn't illegal to price items seperately, and refuse to sell them seperately, it bloody well should be.

Absolutely agree. Same as Sportscraft used to have some nice merino stuff before it all went offshore. CR is ok if you're into wrinkly chinos...

If it's close you get the pants altered. If you're too far off you give up buying off the rack

I'm lucky here jeans and a jacket is considered well dressed. If I'd have to go full suits the tailor would end up giving me a room.

I've still got some sweaters and a couple of button-down collar shirts that I bought from Country Road the better part of twenty years ago. They're a bit faded and fraying, but they've worn beautifully and are supremely comfortable. I used to love browsing in Country Road.

Now, on the other hand, you couldn't pay me to shop there...

I went into the store in Doncaster to look at pocket squares. The staff on at the time were clueless, snooty twits.

Have you seen the prices of their pocket squares? I was interested in a simple navy blue with white polka-dot square, and nearly fell over when they told me the price. For $120 I'd expect platinum thread! Especially when you can buy Zegna ones from their boutique in Sydney for about $85 - or good quality ones from Herringbone for about $70.

The only Farage store where I've felt remotely welcome was the one at Bondi Junction in Sydney, but it must be a recruitment guideline to hire snooty sales assistants. Perhaps they think it makes their brand more 'exclusive' if their staff make you feel like you're not good enough to shop there? Its a shame as they have some nice stuff from time to time, but the lack of service really puts me off.

Guess what? It's happened again, in a seperate clothing chain in Sydney. I called up about a pair of pants I saw - I even asked them whether they had any funny ideas there about refusing to sell a pair of seperately priced trousers discrete from the jacket - and the SA said no it was no problem.

So when I get there I encounter the same story I got at Farage from the store manager, they won't sell me the seperately priced pants! I was especially annoyed that the SA had made me come all the way down there only to reneg on his agreement.

Sounds like this preposterous policy is quite common in Australia. I can only hope that as things get worse for the high end retail sector here that stores reconsider this stupid policy of making customers pay for items seperately, yet refusing to sell them seperately when it doesn't suit (no pun intended).

I'm pretty convinced this is unlawful and should be pointed out to store management.

Thanks, but I already bought a slim cut navy suit last week - I was just after a spare pair of pants from the same store, and they wouldn't indulge me even though I'd just proven I wasn't a tightarse!

I might try the unlawful line if this happens again - though in this case I'm a regular customer at the shop and didn't want to threaten them as they have always been very good in the service stakes, though at the time I made my point that it was extremely disappointing.

I shall ***** about this no more!
