I thought I would try to learn to make ties. I was discouraged by the cost of iron-on interlining fabric. Advice?

Apparently, some people will scavenge interlining from old ties.

Iron-on interlining isn't what you want for ties anyway. You want a floating wool or hair canvas interlining slip-stitched to the rear seam of the tie.

The multiple layers loosely joined make it easier for the tie to spring back into shape once you tie it. Fusible makes the front surface feel hard and not nice to tie, and provides little in the way of support. It's a tie, not a whole suit. You can't skimp on the lining fabric especially when it makes such a big difference to the end result. Never use fusible in neckties. Bad bad bad.

You could also try making unlined ties if you can find a hardier fabric to use as the base. Unlined ties are not as durable, but they're slightly cooler around your neck in summer.
