I am new to raw denim and not sure what to go with.

    I have a 30 waist, 5'9", 130-135 pounds.

I was looking into either Crates or Ande Whalls.

The three styles I see for crates are Journals, Routes, and James. I don't see any actual measurements for them though. I don't want a super skinny jean. If somebody could tell me or link me to a website with the measurements I would appreciate it.

Also, I suppose I am willing to fork out $75 more for the Ande Whalls if the quality is better. In which case I would probably go with either the grifters or cougars. Are the grifters a very tight fit?

http://blog.shopfarinellis.com/2009/...surements.html The price difference is actually closer to $100 with the styleforum discount (20%). Email Farinelli's and see what sizes they have available.

Thanks for the quick replys on the measurements! Another noob question... With an inseam of 35" on all of the Crates do you guys just wear them as is? I would think that would be ridiculously long [IMG] Just let them stack up or or do you them altered in some way? I guess the jeans I normally wear have about a 30 inseam so I would imagine 5 more inches would be too much length.

Thanks for the quick replys on the measurements! Another noob question... With an inseam of 35" on all of the Crates do you guys just wear them as is? I'm 5'10 and I used to think the best inseam for me was a 30 because I thought it made the jeans slimmer. It didn't. It just made me look like I was wearing a levis version of thom browne clothing Anyway, the inseams are longer for stacking--it makes it so the wearer sets in his/her own honeycombs behind the knees and the like. The routes aren't super skinny--like it's been said here, they feel a lot looser than they actually appear. They're also lightweight and good for the summer. You have to make sure you know your actual waist size as well, as the routes are what people here have called an "honesty" jean--most size 30 pants have a waist greater than 30 inches, so measure where you're going to wear the pants and buy the pair with the corresponding waist measurements.. You might want to look into the crate vs fatinellie thread--it sounds like they hit it out of the ballpark with that pair Some people hem them, but not that frequently it seems. Wear them a bit--it seemed long to me when purchasing, but I think it looks a lot better

Another A.P.C size question. Sorry to bore you all. I would try them on, but they don't sell them in my town. I want to buy New Cures. I currently wear size 29 in Naked and Famous Weird guys: they are a good fit. I measured the back of my N&Fs and they are about 16" stretched out. My waist is about 32".

I'm unsure because on one site: the 29 New Cures are said to have a waist measurement of 31", just like my size 29 N&Fs which seems perfect, but on another site, they say to size down 1 size, but is the from true waist or otherwise?

Do cut to the chase, I don't know whether to get 29s or 30s. If I get 30s will they stretch still nice and tight to a 32" waist. Or is the safe bet the size 29s. What do they stretch to, approximately.

I'm a total new comer, please enlighten me. Reading all the forums has just made me confused.

    Thanks,
    mld

The Grifters are "slim", but not "tight", imo (Just be sure to size correctly. ). The Rakers are straight up tight. Also, the AW will be a bit better in construction than the Crate's. I also much prefer the details on AW's to Crate's (ex. AW may have the best looking back pockets for a casual style jean ever). Personally, I would pay the $100 difference for the AW's over Crate any day of the week.

Assuming you go with a slim jean, I would let the extra denim stack personally. If you go with a straight leg or a boot cut, I would probably get them hemmed. It's just personally preference. There is no right or wrong way to wear them.

Size down one refers to sizing down after vanity. So if you're a true 32, then vanity= 30, size down one= 29. To be honest, the new cures are skinny cut so you can get away with either. For reference I am 5'10, 140, true 31" and I got a 29; the fit is a little bit around the ass/thigh, otherwise it's perfect.

Wow. It appears I have a lot to learn about jeans here. I'm 6'2", 175. I normally wear a 33/34, but I seem to be having all sorts of problems finding jeans lately. I was wearing Lucky, but have found them to be short lived. The holes in the knees show up way to soon. The other thing that really bothers me is each pair fit different. When trying them on, I'll grab 4 of the same size hoping one will fit. Last time out I found two that fit decent. One brand is AG and the other is Agave. The Agave fits the best while the AG is just a tad tight around the waist. I'm a rather slender guy, but it seems that if I find jeans that fit my waist, they're tight in the thighs. If I find something that fits my legs, the waste is loose. Oh, I'm 33 and slightly fasion forward, but severly lacking in knowledge. I also like to buy good quality, but also of value. Help would be appreciated.

6'2 175 is a fairly normal build... not sure why you have run into such problems unless it is the cut of the jean that is the culprit... 33, 34 waists= a pretty big jean; with that said the rec's you will get around here will vary depending on your price range... I'm assuming $200 and under- APC, Route, and Ande Whall (for $25 more) will probably be what you are looking for.

33 waist, 34 length. Very occasionally I'll find a 32 that fits, but 33 fits the bill 99% of the time.

I'll take a look at those brands you mentioned. Besides fit, do they hold up well?

Any comments on the AG or Agave jeans? They were new to me.

AG has been making jeans for ages but I've never seen a fit that would remotely be approved by our straight/slim straight standards. Agave, to put it bluntly, is an old-man jeans brand. If you've totally given up on your look and just want something comfortable to wear when hanging out with your 2.5 kids, either of those jeans would make fine choices.

Otherwise, the jeans previously mentioned would work but would add RRL if you're looking to go a bit more high-end and Nudie if you're looking for something more affordable with loads of fit options. It'd be nice to know what kind of fit you're comfortable with as just naming brands gives absolutely no concrete description of the jeans themselves.

Depends on how you wear them. If you are like most of the people here and wear them hard for 6+ months without washing, the durability will be compromised. Washed jeans are generally more durable but in reality, unless you are having a nuclear war on it I really doubt it should be an issue.

A friend of mine has worn his APCs for 18 months without a wash... hes hiked/biked/skated/construction work/everything in the jeans and aside from a ripped backpocket everything has held up. This is an extreme though... and quite nasty.

Newbie question- I recently got a pair of APC New Cures, which are raw, and want them to stay the dark blue denim color throughout and not fade: what should I do? I have a pair of raw Nudies which I wore for about two years without washing and has amazing fades, so I don't want the same look.

    Thanks
