I'm a 37 chest, 32 waist, 37 hips. I'm about 5'11 and 135lbs. The key thing is that my chest is barrel-shaped and my shoulders are quite narrow. When I put on the average shirt, the sleeves are simply too long and either the front or back billows out like a tent. I'm trying to order custom shirts online, but as far as I've seen you can't do this for t-shirts. Also, I have some shirts, including polo shirts, that I want to keep.

I was thinking I could get fitted shirts, but I find that accentuates my narrow waist and makes my hips look big, like the problem Mayor has here:

What kind of tailoring should I be doing to adjust make off the rack shirts fit right without causing hip flare?

Sometimes I notice that shirts / sweaters that taper around the waist or even have some sort of elastic down there fit well, but it's hard to find shirts like that. Does anyone know of any types of shirts or upper-body wear that has that? It prevents the tent aspect while preserving enough space to keep the silhouette of the upper body big enough to match the hips.

You cannot get around the "problem" of your bodyshape. Whatever article of clothing you have will either accentuate the curves or hide it. Most people want a really defined waist by tapering the shirt around the waist way too much.

Right, I want to hide the curves. How do I do this? Is it possible to narrow the bottom of the shirts without bringing the waist too far in?

This is where image consultants can be helpful.

One suggestion is to not shirts wear that end at the widest point of the hips. Other, probably less appreciated ideas are to wear patterned shirts (fit isn't as easily noticed) or rather monochromatic outfits in medium or dark colors or use layering. Probably what would help you most is working to increase those shoulders. Elastic on shirt waists (or cuffs) usually indicates poor quality clothing not made for the young person that you presumably are.
