how wide is too wide

ok - I have a MTM black suit 3 button no vent w/ a white pinstripe - it is about not discreet. how wide is too wide for a pinstripe?

Personal preference. I like a nice, bold chalkstripe, so I can't talk. But are you referring to the width between stripes or the thickness of the stripes themselves?

so a stuffy auto company legal dept is no place for chalk then huh? think the same size stripes as the pic of ralph lauren in flusser's book when he describes all of the fabric styles and comments about lauren in "his striped repose" or something like it.

That's an interesting take. I would say that a pin stripe stands out more starkly than a chalk stripe, so a chalk is actually a little more subtle a choice.

Chalk striping is usually found on flannels, and is considered more of a Friday suit.

Pinstripes can stand out or they can blend, depending on the color of the stripe (white, pearl, light blue, red, etc) and how they are woven (dotted, double, etc.). But they are woven into worsted cloth and considered second only to solids in their suitability for business.

well _ I wore the suit work this morning anyhow with a white french cuff shirt and an orange tie (with an orange, yellow, white, and blue pocket square). I had to run errands at lunch and had 3 women stop me at separate times to compliment me. go figure.

That would stop me right in my tracks. I'm suspect of a woman's judgement concerning male sartorial choices, I give their opinion the same weight as a child's or a blind persons. Never allow a woman to influence your style, after all, they created the Amjack.
