I have been wanting to essay the button-down/crew neck sweater combination similar to some of the looks on FivePointFox.com. Unfortunately, I've found that often I look baggy and fat. I think some of it has to do with the button-down bunching up in areas and some to do with the sweater possibly being too wide, but they both look great on their own, just not together.

I'm thinking of getting both sweater and shirt resized, but maybe there are some basic tips for this combo that I am missing to avoid this effect. Any suggestions on either front?

It sounds like the fit of the shirt and sweater is the only thing that is going to fix your issue. Pictures would help...

If you're wearing a button down under a sweater, the shirt should definitely fit well - sounds like it's baggy. If the sweater looks fine on it's own then fixing the shirt should fix your problem. The easiest way is to wear the sweater to a men's shop that has fitted shirts (often called 'slim fit') and try one on under the sweater. But, I suspect that's the problem.
