How to wear a scarf with a tie?

I have a cocktail reception tonight, to which I need to wear both a tie and, likely, a scarf. It is a gathering of prominent attorneys, judges, and legislators, along with students at my law school. The cocktail reception is outside, albeit in large event tents with heaters. Typically, the weather here at this time of the year is mild (in the range of 50F at night). However, tonight, the temperature is supposed to drop to the mid-20s, so it will be unseasonably cool. A tie is a must at this event, but I feel it would also be appropriate and smart to wear a scarf.

My question, then, is: What is the best way to tie a scarf when wearing it with a necktie? How do I wear both a scarf and a tie at the same time (hopefully it is possible).
Thanks.

Draped around the back of the neck and not Tied in any way. Your tie will close up your shirt and leave you somewhat warm. here your scarf might be more decorative than practical.

That's actually what I was originally thinking. I've picked out my scarf in the right color for the other things I'm wearing, I just didn't know if there was a way to wear the scarf practically, rather than decoratively. I can't come up with an attractive and sophisticated way to tie the scarf without it obscuring most or all of my tie.

Any other way you will look silly.

Its kinda silly that they schedule things like that outdoors without adequate heating at this time of the year but whatever.

I'm with FIH. You can wear your scarf high on the back of your neck if you are cold and tuck it just enough around the front of your overcoat so the tie peeks out. If it is not too windy, the scarf will create a "warm zone" under your chin even though it is exposed. That sounds weird, but I think it makes sense.

Leave the scarf at home. They look silly and affected with formal wear.

Last night I attended a function in very windy below zero temperatures. My scarf served a useful purpose in protecting the back of my neck. A scarf, even with a tie, is very functional.

Being Homeless is not a function.

Seriously though for goodness sakes, why make a function in sub degree weather?
