Is there a definitive guide for measuring shoes accurately?

I have found the below thread in this regard:

http://www.styleforum.net/showthread.php?t=50997

To my understanding, there are two types of shoe measurements-- Outsole and insole.

Correct me if I am wrong, but we should not rely on outsole measurements, especially for non-single-leather-soled shoes and shoes with storm welt.

As to measuring the insole, a post in a thread I read suggests that measuring the interior of the sole stitching would give you accurate insole measurements. So if this is correct, I guess we need to make a differentiation between shoes whose soles are stitched aloft and which have channeled soles, and measuring the former would be quite easy, as shown in the attached photo (Please enlarge the image as there is some Microsoft Paint work there)

I will really appreciate if you can comment on the photo and say whether measuring the red lines in the photo would give us accurate measurements of length&width of shoes.

Your comments for measuring shoes with channeled sole will also be appreciated.
