Sirs,
One is occasionally tempted to purchase clothing items on the Interweb yet discouraged from doing so due to being unsure of ones physical dimensions: where precisely does one measure from and to?
Could anyone point to an online guide, preferably illustrated, from which one could take a lead in order to feel more confident in ones e-purchasing follies.
implicitly yours,
etc

Harris posted a great tutorial on this exact issue. I don't have a link, but you could probably find it by running a search or wait until a more diligent member posts it.

But, the real thrust of my post is that since you are talking about buying, rather than selling, on-line, you cannot be guaranteed that people use AHarris's method. It's a good starting point, but to be truly comfortable (especially when you cannot return the item, or must pay return shipping), it is best to ask the seller exactly how it arrived at the posted measurements.
