Can someone post a nice unbiased "how to" guide on matching tie and shirt properly.

    Thanks

Wow, good luck with that man. It's way too personal: some people are comfortable mixing colors and patterns, other prefer the 2+1 theory (two solids and only one pattern). The broadest possible guidelines are that patterns should be of different sizes and colors should not be from opposite sides of the color wheel.

There was a 'game' recently posted, an image consultant type site where you could pick shirt and tie patterns and see them against one another. It had some good comments on all the combinations.

    1) Throw shirt on bed/couch/table/floor.
    2) Throw tie on top of shirt.
    3) Do they work together? If yes, wear. If not, start again.

I'm going to start sounding like a shill for Flusser since this is my second straight post recommending "Dressing the Man", but he does include a chapter about pattern matching. The basics are:

    same pattern, use different scales.
    different patterns, use similar scales.
use patterns which contain a common color and/or pick up a color from another clothing item.
    avoid multiple small-scale patterns.

Of course, I've vastly oversimplified the advice.

Andy Gilchrist of AskAndy fame also has information on his website and his CD, which I can also recommend.

    Nice link. Thanks!

No prob. I personally love these two looks and the pictures inspired me to copy them at several occasions (i.e. i bought the 2 ties and the shirt on the right from Alister... [IMG])
