How to distress/brush a buckle

Hi there

I have a pretty shiny nickel buckle, what would be the process to brush/distress this with good results? I heard about scotch brite pad, I tried in the back of the buckle and does not look like a nice finish to me

to rust metal you can scratch it up with sandpaper and then keep a wet washcloth or paper towel on it

Steel wool, lime, some type of calcifying liquid.
