Hello all Long time lurker, first time poster. Forgive me if I violate any unspoken forum etiquette. I'll adapt soon enough, haha
I know Hugo Boss isn't well-liked here. However, I'm a young menswear enthusiast on a shoestring budget with an occasional fondness for the 1990s double-breasted "Niles Crane" look. I live in Denmark, and on German classifieds the used market for Boss suits is insanely saturated (perhaps owing to their patriotic spirit?). Finding used Boss suits in pristine shape for <$20 is no problemo. I only wish I was a size 50 instead of a 48, which would about double my options. As with many of my physical attributes, I come in just a couple cm short of the competition
I know buying from another country's classifieds is pretty weird, but European eBay post-Brexit just sucks. I guess when they put all the extra work into listing it there, they like to get their money's worth. Same goes for the local classifieds in my woefully overprivileged home country. So until I either find 1) a better strategy or 2) a briefcase filled with unmarked bills, Germany it is.
Anyways, I understand that in 2021, Hugo Boss make overpriced suits out of synthetic fibres and sweatpant-fabric, taking the "men in tights" approach to silhouette. I have chortled my fair share at the individuals who like that look (and to each their own), but the last thing I want to do is end up with one of those ensembles. Unfortunately, with Germany being over the border, I can't go try things on in person. So I figure if I can verify that that a garment is at least 15-20 years old, I won't have to fully rely on the measuring skills of inexperienced sellers that I'm speaking to through Google Translate, and all I'll really have to worry about is sizing and material.
The problem I'm encountering is that Hugo Boss have neither changed their logo, nor tagging system in at least 20 years. The tags are ripe with long and stupid numbers, but I have no idea how to use those numbers to pin an age to these things. I've tried asking the sellers, but they tend to assume I'm worried about condition, and it's tricky to get a straight answer out of them. I'm hoping someone here might have the expertise to point me in the right direction- maybe some big stupid spreadsheet of their product history I can comb through.
Either way, I'm really pleased to finally be here Expect loads of posts and comments from me in the future.
